Guys there are already a few threads on this this news was released months ago i read space.com every day. This is very interesting so maybe we should talk about it in this thread too lets hope the mods don't close it
.

I have a thread similar to this on an estimate based on this data by lead NASA scientists if you wanna pay a visit (read the thread) and contribute.
New Estimate for Alien Earths: 2 Billion in Our Galaxy Alone

S & F none the less

This is not true we cannot truly know the numbers but the latests updated numbers are talked about on my thread posted above^^^

I think the new number is an Earth like planet for every 50 stars so 2 Earth like planets for every 100 stars isn't that bad

I think there is several other different types of planets that can sustain life forms so i'd guess every 1/5 solar systems have some form of life possibly greater we just can't be certain yet.

But these numbers are great compared to what we had before.

Before this we had 0 Data on the subject

Thing is, even with finding these many planets.
Why haven't we found a single planet with life yet? Do you think, that our technology isn't up to the task to see through some barrier they might have put up? That gives fake conditions, that meets the requirement:This planet doesn't house life?
I wish, I could trust whatever data NASA gives us....
The Aliens/ETs out there would be laughing seeing, that we can't catch up to them or something>_>...
Give it a few more years, something like a deadline is for sure coming our way.
I just hope it's for the good, because I wouldn't love the latter...

The best our technology can do is get a few pixels of huge gas giant/browndwarf types ATM so the resolution would be horrible.

To take pictures of smaller planets there is a special method they can use i think to have an object block the light from the sun so they can take the image of the much dimmer planet other wise it would be impossible.

They are researching more ways to achieve this task though.

From my estimate its probably going to be decades until we can get an clear high res image of earth like planets. Unless some huge breakthrough in technology happens. Even then noone might be up to building a several kilometer radius telescope that would be need to image an earth type planet in a far away system in high resolution.

Oh and you do know we don't even have high res images of some of the planets in our own solar system you know this right? lol (Pluto, Sedna, Etc)
