Do you sometimes think human pursuits are very very strange?

Well, it is a simple one really - do you ever look at some human pursuits, and think that objectively speaking, they might seem a bit strange,

I caught a bit of rugby on tv. and just had a fleeting thought that to the observer of humans, a lot of humans grouped together making a giant spider ( the scrum) on a field, surrounded by thousands of other humans getting very emotional (the spectators), when really it has no real bearing on their lives, seemed really weird.

It was a fleeting, brief thought, but for a moment it seemed insane.

Do you ever look at homo sapiens and think that what we do in some aspects of life is very very odd indeed?

Oh yeah. We are a weird bunch for sure. Nice topic BTW.

I used to sometimes get gobsmacked by the weirdness of the human condition....to myself I thought of it as a version of the question, "why do we have five fingers instead of 4 or 6"? So much of what we take for granted as bedrock normlacy seems so arbitrary when examined in isolation. It just goes to show how meshed we are with our background, environment, surroundings, and ultimately all of creation...we are a part, and the things we do only make sense when considered as parts of an ineffable whole rather than by themselves.

I've had that thought before. Absolutely. It's difficult to describe that feeling without sounding insane. We basically know why we play sports or observe sports (it's fun or it feels good). We are ruled by our senses, and we do things in this world that seem rewarding in that way. It's not just sports events that may seem bizarre, it's also certain habits which could be as simple as placing your hand to your forehead, or crossing your arms. These simple hand gestures can be a response to something somebody said, but they have absolutely no physical function other than maybe communicating your feelings to the other person. At least the communication through body movement can be explained, but what about hand gestures or foot movements we make when we're alone, with nobody to communicate to? Why do we do it? Who knows. It's just another one of those questions to be explored.

Yes football (UK soccer). Don't get it at all. I've seen grown men sobbing like children because 'their' team has lost?!!

"We won on Saturday!"

You won nothing, you weren't involved in anysort of fashion. A bunch of overpaid scumbags with a God complex won, against an almost identical group of people

I can kind of understand if it's your local team, but as in the case of the English Premiership people from all over pick random teams to support which they have no connection to whatsoever. Then they argue and cry like massive losers when their team loses. It seems completely alien to me and a complete waste if time.

Rant over.

Of course, there are those who would say that rugby is in fact the epitome of human expression. An elegant game.

The fact that mankind has wide variety is surely what makes us human. If we all followed football (yawn), or tennis (snore) or just sat like puddings watching adverts on telly (American football)
, then what a boring un-human world we would live in.

Regards

Indeed! Much of what the vast majority of the species does in general is not natural behavior, but rather preconditioned indoctrination aimed at artificial subservience to any figure of authority.

All the time man...makes for a good laugh to imagine Aliens observing our strange behaviour...The last time I imagined it, I was watching a concert...

Some guys hopping around on stage and 50 000 people jumping around infront of them.

You can just see the Alien like: wtf are these creatures doing oO

Ive often wondered the same. Take football (soccer if your American). Essentialy its 22 men kicking an air filled leather ball around a field for 90 mins. Yet it inspires such devotion and emotional attachment worldwide. Personaly i think it boils down to boredom. We'll persue anything that will will fill some of the void, and those who cant participate are willing to spend their time watching others do it. Anything that takes our minds off the realitys of our existance basically. We aspire to fill every waking minute in an attempt to feel like we've done something with our lives. Which to some extent is a good thing. At least were not worrying ourselves with the harsh realitys of the modern age of which the list is endless.

Imagine the group making the spider, what went on inside of the people doing it. Each in a different position not making a spider, but together.. haaahhahaha ....making a spider. All coincidence.

Noone probably understands what I really meant.
