I have looked and looked and do not see this specific video anywhere on ATS so I am posting it to get some feedback. I really don't know what to make of it because this is really not my area of expertise, but the video does seem to be showing some really crazy things going on with the sun and other possible objects around it. I'm not saying the guy in this video is correct because I just don't know, but wanted to get some feedback from those of you who are better educated in this stuff.

ETA: I can't seem to get the video to embed right. Here's the link www.youtube.com...

The Sun is expanding. In billions of years it will be big enough to have consumed the earth. Link to Wikipedia article

So what do you make of the video? Did you watch it?

Yes, I don't understand what the fuss is about.

The pictures are from an solar observational instrument called "Stereo" which consists of two satellites with cameras that look at the Sun (most of the time).

Occasionally the satellites drift and they have to be re-targeted at the Sun.

It looks like most of these images were made when during retargeting/refocusing.

They can also switch different lenses (like zoom lenses) and filters in and out from "mission control" to image particular features. That is all I am seeing in this video.

Generally, these things (stereo images) are put on the web to educate the public.

If you like you can read about and follow the links here.

A star passing by our star?

Does it occure to the maker of this video that we would SEE that star? In our night sky.. or in our day time sky... Is the star sneaking about? Is it turning off whenever a human looks up?

its hogwash. the white cirlce, supposed to be how big the sun is to SOHO, and the actual sun so big by comparison. myabe photoshop or something. if the sun had grown that big , wede have seen it from earth, any of us on a clear day, and im sure it would have heated things up here quite a bit.
the sun is an enromous ball of fire..nuclear energy. fusion. its gravity that contains the mass of the sun in place. so in actuallity, the sun can and does expand, but not that much! thats insane.
the sun is expected to go red giant, in about 4.6 billion years. of which may extend to to the orbit of mars, swallowing the earth, or just big enough, so the earth is time to time, going in and out of the sun, in its orbit.
this guys video is whack

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought as a Star gets bigger it gets cooler as there is less energy to burn and thus ends up burning all its energy and going into supernova, basically smaller = hotter, bigger = cooler

no ?

The sun is going to expand eventually according to science. when is another scientific estimate. Hopefully by the time it does, we have ventured somewhere else in this strange place. But i won't be here so I may never know.
I will say its in the process of expanding.

I'd assume that if the Sun is expanding, (which it most definitely is) then it would push away the planets as it grows, such as the gravitational force holding us in orbit would expand, as well.

But I'm not an astrophysicist.

Also, if the Sun grows, I'd assume the Earth grows, too.

I would say that is true too. At least it seems logical. Also, I think he does mention in some of the writing that the sun would be getting cooler as it expanded.

Obviously as someone else mentioned, if the sun were to grow that huge it would be noticeable. I guess I was mostly interested in what would cause effects like that in the images. Now if it's simple lens changes that would explain it. I don't get though how this explains the "other object" seeming to emit some type of solar flare? Obviously I'm still missing something.

Ok can someone explain what the 2 stars are?

I'm well aware that the stereo ahead & behind cams drift & need to be Re-aligned

and this would account for the sun not being present in a few shots, we have been over this many times on here but what are the 2 other objects that they are calling other stars? which are moving very fast?

can anyone bring me up to speed here

s&f

EDIT
The two other object do appear to be stars they have solar flares coming of them? so which star is it because its not ours that far away or have the cameras drifted our really far? someone needs to fill me in here im confused

Okay, after reading that link, I concur that this is most definitely what is going on with the "disappearance" of the sun....but I still don't get what the other "objects" are.

I guess we better take a peek at what might have been around the sun at that time, but to me, that one definitely appears to give off some kind of flare of its own. Somehow though, with as educated as people around here are, I have a feeling there's a logical explanation...which is why I posted here in the first place. I just don't know what that logical explanation is.

Could it be Mercury and Jupiter? Looks like they were in the area....still doesn't explain the appearance of the "flare" coming off the other object though.

Hmm...now I'm not sure that's correct.....more checking.

Well this certainly is not a subject i follow or know to much about at all if im honest "just the basics", i'm hoping we can get a sound explanation for these two objects certainly is odd to me at the minute tho,

I'm well out of my league as well. Maybe I shouldn't have posted it all for that reason, but then again, that is exactly why I DID post it in the first place. To get feedback from those who know more. I can't seem to find the answers on my own which is baffling because normally I'm pretty good at research. I guess I'm just not educated enough in this department to know where to look.

Here's the current images for comparison: stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov...

Useful links to help understand what we are looking at:
EUV Sun
Coronographs

This one seems to be the most useful and might be the answer to what we are seeing: Artifacts
