This is an issue that's plagued me for weeks and I've searched Google enough. I'm turning to the one place where I'm confident I'll find a solution.

When I plug my iPhone 4 into my laptop, it does not appear in iTunes. It is jail broken and I am running the 4.2.1 software. I do have the most up to date version of iTunes. I've played with msconfig and disabled non-Microsoft programs, to no avail. I've done hard reset after hard reset after hard reset, no avail. I've reinstalled iTunes, no go. I've turned off my spyware and anti-virus protection, no go. I can't imagine it would be an issue with the Windows Firewall, as it was only recently an issue.

Now if I plug it into my wife's computer, it does appear there. So it's not an issue with the phone itself. But something with my laptop. I'm at a loss here.

When I plug it in, the laptop recognizes it and asks what I want to do with it. The standard Windows message when you plug something in via the USB. But iTunes will not recognize it.

Help... please!

that's a strange problem to have.

You can try and bypass iTunes tho, download an app called Doubletwist.
It's a good itunes replacement. if that doesn't work, reinstall itunes.
Also, which computer did you sync your phone to last?

Try using SongBird, it's a free music player like iTunes.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think a replacement media player is going to solve my issue of having my iPhone appear in iTunes.

I've already uninstalled iTunes and then reinstalled it. No dice there.

My first tactic is try another usb port.
For some reason one of my ports on my laptop ignored my iphone a few times in a row.
I tried another and it worked fine. It was weird, but it worked.

Does the iphone beep and start charging when connected?

I've tried them all. And yeah, when I plug it in it beeps and the computer itself recognizes it. It prompts me what I want to do. It's just iTunes that doesn't recognize it.

I'm toying with the drivers now in my Device Manager in hopes of it solving something.

your current problem might be your current media manager (itunes). if you try Doubletwist and it works, at least we'll know it's not a hardware issue.

I'll pour over some forums for you.
Did you swap out the cable and verify that the phone is receiving enough juice?

Itunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically...is there a check in this box? If so, remove it.

Hmm...there was a complaint about this elsewhere, and the remedy was upgrading to 4.2.1 but it appears you already have that. Did it happen soon after that update?

I'm going to look into Wi-Fi Sync and whether or not there is known issues surrounding this program.

What itunes does your wife run?
I'd roll back to that one if it is different.

Let me know how it goes
good luck my friend

I've got a workable system. I plug the cord in, get an error code and while maintaining the connection, turn the phone off and on. When it turns back on, I get a connection.

Lessee....Has this been happening since the jailbreak?
Maybe there is a conflict somewhere?
If you really wanted to, you could do a factory reset to your original system, & check that.
Maybe something on the phone is to blame. not so much an app as maybe an incompatibility.

I believe it began to happen once I loaded Wi-Fi Sync onto my phone and computer. It's a program to sync music over a Wi-Fi connection and you don't need the cord. I put a program on my phone and on my computer. Since then I think I've had an issue. Haven't fixed it yet but it's doable for now.

I too have a jailbroken iphone.
I kept the 3.2.1 version for my 3g

Does the wireless sync run much slower than hardwire?
If you would, what ius the app name?
I'd like to give it a try.

Also, do you need anything more than itunes running on the pc end?
A good portion of my terabyte tower is full of music.
do you utilize torrents at all?

WINDOWS IS NOT RECOGNIZING YOUR IPHONE AS A PLUG AND PLAY DEVICE

YOU NEED TO DELETE THE HARDWARE PROFILE FOR THAT IPHONE OR WHATEVER IT IS..

WINDOWS SHOULD THEN RECOGNISE IT CORRECTLY

THE WIFI APP WONT AFFECT IT SYNCING
