After spending his entire lifetime — nearly a century! — assuming he was an American, one World War II veteran recently got the surprise of his life when he went to apply for an enhanced driver’s license and was turned down. It turns out 95-year-old Leeland Davidson is actually Canadian.

In 1916, Davidson was born in British Columbia to two American parents. But when his parents returned with him to America, they never had their son declared a U.S. citizen. Although U.S. citizenship is not necessary for military service, Davidson thought his citizenship issues were resolved when he enlisted in the Navy in 1940.

I was not sure what forum to post this in, so MODS if you need to move it go ahead.

I thought this was a pretty interesting story. I think it would be kind of weird to have fought in WW2 and find out when your 95yrs old that you are not even an American citizen. I had no idea you could even join the military without being a citizen. I guess it makes sense a little, if someone wants to help fight in the war go ahead and let them. If they take away his social security or deport him though, that would just be cruel.

That is crazy. You would think he would have found out before! Hasn't he filed a tax return? Maybe he should run for President!

Could be.

"American" is just a word. He fought in WW2. He's a real American, laws be damned.

I don't see how that's news. America and Canada are practically the same place. The same cultures, the same continent. Divided by an imaginary line. Birth location matters? Please god end humans please

I would think the time spent in service to his country and decades of living under what assumed residency would be enough for some sort of grandfathered in case. But still, a very interesting story!

You mean to say it's non automatic? That's weird...
It reminds me of when we discovered (as did he) that my father was an over-stayer in NZ just before he died - he'd been here for 20+ years, and thought citizenship was automatic for British citizens after a certain number of years. Immigration visited and said "We're going to deport you" and he said "Be my guest!" Whether they would have or not, we'll never know, because he died within the year. He was only 54, so no one expected that - I think he was calling their bluff.

Guess it is time to deport him, huh? Good thing he is retired and no longer stealing jobs from hard working Americans, yeah? *smirk*

canada and the united states are NOT the same place. though we may have similar culture based on excess and comfort, the people and the general demeanor as well as basically every form of public or private service is quite different, and since most places in canada have far less population, there is a big difference in the societal tone as well. This would be much like me saying that australia and new zealand are pretty much the same place, or china and japan, its just not true.

apparently his citizenship was of no concern when used as cannon fodder or at tax time.
but now apparently america has no use for him.
WWII vet's really got a bum deal when slick willy stole their medical benefits.

he was applying for an enhanced license? dude is still working at 95?

but hey it's americas loss if he leaves IMO
