To me anything over a 7 is major, depends on depth of quake, location of quake whether dense population or sparse.

Where else would we find sunspots other than the sun?

It's pretty hard to see much of a correlation between solar activity and seismic activity.

Well the sun is getting a little more active today, just a magnetic filament so far, but the earthquake activity is also picking up a bit from the last few days. Japan had another (aftershock?) USGS is reporting at 6.3.

BLAST MISSES EARTH: A magnetic filament on the sun's northeastern limb erupted on March 28th, hurling part of itself into space: SDO image. The debris is expected to miss Earth.
