Here's a pretty cool picture taken of the recent super moon in Alaska, it appears square due to atmospheric conditions creating a mirage...

Atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley explains what happened: "This is a very strong mirage produced by rays bent while crossing intense vertical temperature gradients between a layer of cold air beneath warmer air. The lunar disk details are vertically stretched, suggesting that the mirage is part of a fabled Fata Morgana. If we could see distant mountains they would likely be distorted into fantastical vertically elongated shapes resembling castles and tall spires. The high Arctic is famous for these mirages."

Wow.. Was that visible to the naked eye? I'm not saying it's fake, but it looks like some stretched pixels there.. Is it not a camera glitch?

Looks a bit photoshopped to me.

If real, i would of loved to see that. Good find

Yup, visible to the naked eye, at least from the photographers perspective.

Follow the links in the quote for a more detailed explanation.

Very cool Chad! But I know the moon was temporarily squashed due to the incredible gravitational forces of Nibiru, which is currently cloaked right beside the moon in preparation for 2012 and the coming of the Galactic Federation of Light! Are you sure you're not a dis-info agent?

Blossom will share those details about the gravitational squashing of the moon after she channels the GFL.

Slightly larger image if anyone is interested:

I have seen this, some 15 years ago when i was a sailor.
I have totally forgotten about it, untill i saw this picture.

It was on a trip from England to greenland with steel.
It was not as outlined as on this picture, but still looked like the moon had been squeshed, when comming over the horizon.

I know the drill..No picture, it didn't happen..But it was cool anyway, and so is this picture

And thank you for refreshing my memory

I am SO glad this thread is NOT about what I thought it was going to be, something along the lines of "HAY GUISE! We got it wrong the moon isn't round itza sukware!"

It wouldn't be much different than some of the threads on here. You get a star just for that LOL!

The pic does look really shifty though... what's the deal with the MS paint-lookin edge on it like someone else pointed out?

I'm assuming, if real, that the top curved part of the moon is right over the horizon, and the bottom part is just a stretched out part of it, making it look square?

Kinda neat!

I'm really hoping that another picture pops up of this same 'rare' event....
There must be someone else if this was real, it's amazing enough to take a picture...

The effect probably only lasted for minutes at most and I don't think there are too many people on Alaska's north slope with cameras out in the cold taking pictures of the rising moon. I mean obviously there's at least one, but would there be a second who's close enough to this photographer to catch the exact same refractive effect? I don't know but it wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't.

I am thinking that the photographer was probably in a very remote and desolate location. I originally had my doubts (not from Chadwickus who is a respected member) about the image itself. I would have expected less symmetry and a more irregular shape. A brief search reveals the photographer and location checks out as he is a former bush pilot and outfitter in remote location in Alaska:

goldenplover.org...

I've been duped by so many hoaxes and ruses as of late here on ATS and the web, that I've become slightly skeptical. At least the nice Nigerian family I am assisting emigrate to US will restore my faith in fellow man, not to mention a handsome financial windfall.

[color=dodgerblue]That isn't the moon, it's a chinese lantern that's been distorted by swamp gas etc etc etc

That is very interesting.

S&F for you, Chadwickus, for helping me learn something new today.

ha, I came into this thread thinking..."Oh great, another misinformed and unedcuated, thread about the moon being something other than it is."

Nice surprise. Very cool!

How would gravity squash something top and bottom? and why is nebru cloaking itself in preparation, if its even real its a planet not a predator hiding waiting to pounce ...
