US expands military presence in Africa
afrol News, 23 September - While abandoning much of its Cold War-era bases in Europe and Asia, the US military is relocating to Africa and the Middle East to "fight terrorism" and "protect oil" resources. In Africa, US bases are to focus on Uganda, Djibouti, Senegal and São Tomé and Príncipe, where flexible, small-scale "jumping off points" exist or are to be built.

The US Pentagon is in a period of major restructuring, in particular regarding American military bases abroad. While enormous bases in Germany and South Korea are abandoned or detracted, new and more flexible bases are constructed or planned all over the world, in particular in the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe.

Could Tripoli be next? This is purely speculation on my part, but Obama has shown that he can lie with the best of them. He stated that we'd be in Libya just for "days". Not weeks, not months. Not years.

But Libya would be a great point to secure the fight against terrorism, oil, a great place to launch fighters, troops, logistics.

Anyone want to sign up and do a tour in Africa?

This is clearly aggressive chess playing. We are moving into what used to be either Soviet sphere of influence or largely left out of the cold war. This has to stop, it will bring the world to the brink as the Russians and Chinese feel the pincers squeezing around them

I'll play neutral for now, but what ever happened to ending the war and bringing our troops home?

I thought that is what Obama was all about.

No I don't believe so, those forementioned bases where pre-emptive .However I don't believe the allies will be successfull .I feel they will be thrown out of the region and hard .They will be driven backwards and will loose some territory as they are pursued in retreat .I feel that the Mediterrean is in for dire times as is Denmark ,France and the UK .The US will have it's own enternal problems .

Interesting take. Our leaders "appear" to be weak enough to cave into threats.
But then again, it's not THEIR butts on the front lines.

Too bad about that. I don't want to see my friends go anywhere else. Afghanistan is bad enough as it is.
