Showing as Breaking News on Fox and as part of CNN's blog. Will update as more info comes in.

EDIT: Well, FOX is saying they evacuated, and only on their Breaking News banner. CNN and NHK World News are only showing that smoke is coming out. TV is rerunning ond info right now (1:30 PDT).

That thread has too many posts and pages to be kept up with, honestly. Nothing is better than starting fresh

Nah it can't be anything important, all I see on the news here is Prince William talking to kids and having BBQ's.

Oh and that girl who published pictures of naked footballers is saying sorry.

Yep, nothing else is going on obviously...

They want to cool the reactor right? Why dont they just bury the sucker in snow or bulldoze the simmering pile off the edge of the world.Stop fking around and fix the problem.

I have to agree with Skate. Down with mega-threads. I make it a rule not to click on them, too much to read, too little time.

Would it be possible to somehow push the reactors into the sea ? There is a outer sea wall in front of the plant that would act like a kind of barricade. Once in the sea the reactor will be cooled and they could then work on building a wall around them and burying them for good.

Well, apart from:
1. all the radio-active dust that would be thrown up into the air, creating much more contamination;
2. all the spent-fuel rods rich in plutonium that would be broken up during the operation, releasing deadly radio-active dust into the atmosphere;
3. the fact that anyone driving bulldozers in this suicidal mission would be killed by the radio-active dust they disturbed and breathed in;

it is a good idea.

Don't laugh Ive put your name forward to drive one of the huge quarry bulldozers. I will be spraying the site with fire extinguisher foam to contain the radioactivity whilst we get on with the job. Should have it done and dusted by tea time then grab a few sapporo beers after .
. Failing that we build a huge glass dome ( like in the Simpson's movie) then using helicopters with suction pads lower over the whole site ,job done.

Exactly. That thread is much too long to be followed coherently; so I'm glad a new thread got started on the situation since this is a new evacuation (independent of the one previously).

With that being said, it is awfully disturbing how many times these workers have been evacuated while we are, at the same time, told that things are "heading in the right direction". Every minute those workers are out of there there is a larger possiblity of this place going into full meltdown and given the fact that they are trying to pull out all the stops to stop a full scale meltdown, mandatory evacuation is a pretty disturbing move.

Keep the families of these workers are the people of Fukushima and in your thoughts or prayers; even if you don't believe in God then the least we can do is attempt to project good vibes towards this area and pray for the best. This development is very disturbing however, especially since we were starting to get our hopes up regarding a possible turn around of the reactor's performance.
