Put yourself in the position of this Russian guy Leonid Elenin. You spot the reflection of a new astral object in space that has never been recorded in the public small body database. All you have at the initial sighting is a single vector to the object. It's an Azimuth snapshot that occurs during a fractional second of time.

You ask yourself why the big science guys haven't reported it yet? You know the apparent size but maybe that is just a dust reflection or out gassing from solar heating. The object could be very large and far away or much smaller and closer. You really don't know at this point in time so you wait.

A few months later the earth has moved to a different "vantage point" so you take another shot and get a different time azimuth. If the object wasn't moving it would be a static triangulation problem to estimate the position within some error envelope. Its possible that Leonid even had some spectroscopic analysis equipment which could tell how fast the comet was moving along a vector component toward earth. The big science guys probably can figure that out from subtle frequency shifting from known reflectance, especially with two different time related observations.

Your own calculations result in a near miss to earth so you conclude the reason why the object was not reported.. Of course if it was really important, like the object was an invading alien craft or a brown dwarf closing in for the kill, you might not want to wait those extra months to determine a more accurate track.

I've got the math aptitude of a Umpa Lumpa, so please chime in with your proofs and lets get to the bottom of this!

There was a recent payload loss by NASA; something like in the billions but did not say what it was. Any launches now might have been key elements at either observation or to intercept it; any losses now could place us blind or fidgeting with the "news". So we only get half the truth, ELEnin approaches but we cannot tell you how big it is or show it to us.

The more recent "rush" to get satellites into orbit in this past year that can see in infrared seems to pose we are not the only ones looking; the World is looking. I would think any number of them will eventually want to be the first to present this; unless it really is ELE; who wants to bear the worst news imaginable?

I like that the Maya see this as an Acceleration of Spirit!

Messenger says it like it is, to send us the message, either that or it is to "phone home"! The magnetics of Earth and Mercury is interesting more so for me because Mars and Venus do not have this? Why not Venus?

If Messenger is to record anything about ELEnin then right now Earth is in a better position for it, but after June 19, Mercury sets about equal distance as Earth to ELEnin and then from there we move further away and Mercury lines up to be utimately the best seat in the house.

Then Earth is going to be in the tail, and if it is as dramatic as they say it might just make us all Bibilical!

You know that Planet X Movie coming out in May called "Melancholia"...Wouldn't it be wild if the kid's name in the movie was "Leo"? ...Oh wait, it is... Check it out for yourself. What do you think of this? A "Leo" discovers the killer asteroid in the movie Deep Impact. Another Leo discovers comet Elenin. There is a kid named Leo in this new planet X movie. Comet Elenin is also known as "X1". Comet Elenin will be approaching us from the constellation Leo. The Sphinx which has the body of a Lion (Leo) stares off into the night sky waiting for something to return....

Ok follow me here.... The comet Elenin is supposed to have an orbital period of 11,830 years. (According to Wikipedia). That would put its last appearance on earth roughly in the vicinity of time when the Sphinx was said to have been built. Of course we can't be sure of the exact date of either, but they are close.

A lot to think about.... One more coincedence... The release date for the movie Melancholia is May 26th. "Comet" Elenin will be closest to earth on September 26th.
