Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan says the government will make every effort to disclose information about the quake-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Kan made the remark at a meeting with the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Yukiya Amano, in Tokyo on Friday.

Amano said his agency and the international community are closely following the troubles at the plant and want to cooperate with Japan in dealing with them. He also asked for more information.

Kan said the government, the Self-Defense Forces and police and fire departments are making every effort to deal with the situation.
He also said the government is disclosing all information but that information-gathering efforts might be insufficient.

Kan said the government will improve its information disclosure by taking photos of the plant regularly and stepping up radiation monitoring.

Wow, more photos and additional radiation monitoring.

This new promise to disclose more about one of the world's greatest disasters comes a week too late.

Transparency was needed years ago when the Japanese Citizen's Nuclear Information Center was questioning some very dubious decisions, like allowing deadly MOX plutonium to be loaded in a 35-year old reactor.
