Gay marriages???

Could somebody please tell me how the government and states think they can pass laws against gay marriages when it goes against the constitution..the government and state are suppose to be seperate from the church not hand and hand...last I checked gay people are well people too...is this a modern day Salem witch hunt?? Should we opress people because of their beliefs? Should our opinions affect others peoples lives??
