His response should have been proportional to the actual threat, which was minimal. I'm not saying you can't defend yourself unless your life is in danger, but with a "finish him" - I'm going to say that's only for the burglar who's trying to rape and kill your family.

Ironically, I think his suspension may have been a good thing in terms of his safety for a few days while things blow over. :

I am sorry that you were bullied too JTC

Your point about Casey being suspended just hit home with me. Back when my boys were being continually assaulted physically and mentally at school (8years ago) and subsequently suspended...this was perhaps just as you say, to keep them safe until the heat died down.

I was obviously too upset and stressed throughout their school years to comprehend that, so thank you for your logical opinion.

Our whole family had to have counselling (intensive for the boys) to cope with the situation that even spilled out into the neighbourhood. We had eggs thrown at our cars, the house and windows were even smashed. Some of the parents of the little darlings told us that we (and our property) were going to continue to be targets for daring to get justice for our boys.

Man, that is just sick, i feel for you and your boys, sounds similar to my experiance. Then people wonder why and cry when the kid finally grabs a Gun and goes on a high school shooting spree as we have seen in the past huh??

His life wasn't on the line, no. Being bullied is worse than that. Thats why so many people who have been bullied kill themselves. Because once the bullying gets to you and the effects start, you WILL be an outcast for the rest of your life. It ruins everything. But for Casey, maybe it won't ruin his life, because he's a hero now, and he deserves it.

The threat to Casey was to be continued to be punched in the face while being filmed so that his pain and humiliation could be shared on the internet.

Pretty sure a snore knee is getting off lightly.

Also, without a show of force, the threat would have continued for the rest of his days at that school. He would have had to constantly live with it. I've never been bullied in my life but would have enjoyed watching some of the other members of the group getting their just deserts also. LOL.

This is ridiculous. So what if the bullied kid is has more weight and is taller than the bullier? Too bad! The bully threw the first punch. If you can't take the heat don't walk into the kitchen. This whole thing could have been avoid if he wasn't being an ass and trying to show off, don't start the fight, have no effect, and think that you are going to leave untouched you must be crazy!

And for the person saying "Animals use violence, Humans use words". This is so ignorant. Humans ARE animals, and Humans DO have animal behavior, this is why we eat, sleep, go to war, and DEFEND OURSELVES WHEN BEING ATTACKED.

In court, the bullied kid would when since the bully initiated the first with the first punch, so there we have it. A conclusion...

Look, I don't want to come off sounding like i'm supporting the "victim" who started throwing punches but i think we need to be subjective here.

I agree that the boy who started the fight got what was coming to him. Why you would start a fight with someone twice your size is beyond me! Also as a side note i was bullied on and off by a few different kids. Some of the bullies i couldn't sort out either because they had a lot of "popular friends" or were much larger than me. However one time i did snot a kid who had been verbally tormenting me for over a year.

I just have to say that i think that most people are forgetting how tormenting the real bullies can be. They can manipulate your friends and even your so called friends may end up trying to push you to fight the bully, mainly so they can see a fight.

I have witnessed this first hand. Sometimes as a weedy kid you can take so much crap from others that all that frustration just builds up that you want to fight that person. I suspect this may be the case here. In my experience fat/big kids never got picked on. In fact most of the bigger/fat kids gave little kids hell. I am only young so i presume its the same.

I'm just saying that this situation could have been caused by the little kid getting tormented by the big kid, little kid gets frustrated and gets pushed by his friends to fight him and not to take it anymore.. consequently little kid confronts casey saying i heard you said sh*t about me. And then frustratedly punches casey.

This may not be the case and if Casey really is just an innocent victim then power to him! Bullies sometimes need to be dealt with. Btw the bully that i punched in the face never said a bad word to me again.

Deny Ignorance.

Come on you guys, you're always better than the bullies, because you're not being a dickhead. Why would you want to fit in with that? I've had the knife pulled on me, I've been chased around by a gang of Somalian immigrants, been -that- fat kid. Why the hell am I the only one who thinks this is wrong?!

Casey was better than the bullies and was not being a dickhead.

The rest of us are repulsed by the insane level of political correctness which punishes victims for defending themselves. Self defense is in no way wrong in a sane society.

Because his "friends" are idiots, manipulating both sides into a confrontation. I have seen this at my old school.

Plausible, but I'd say very unlikely in this case because of the body language of Casey while his collar is being held and he is being punched. An aggressive bully would not have been anywhere near that passive and defensive.

If I was going to take a guess I would say the 12 year old's "heard you've been talking ****" comment could be related to Casey telling a teacher to get help with his being bullied.

Thank you for your kind reply.

We have all managed to get on with our lives but I see how it has scarred us.

You are so right about kids grabbing guns and just losing it. We have had several kids in Oz suicide due to bullying and it breaks my heart. It IS preventable.

I was confused as to why this thread was so popular, as it looked like it'd be an average bully case.

WHY DID THIS LITTLE KID TRY TO DO THIS AGAINST THIS BIG GUY?
He got pwn'd. Its actually not surprising, this is nature.

PLAY WITH FIRE AND YOU GET BURNED.

Having been in this situation I can tell you exactly what this little twerp of a bully was thinking. He thought he would instigate a fight, and the kid wouldn't dare fight back, knowing that there was all kinds of backup just waiting to jump in. He also knew that if he started to lose, his buddies would jump in and bail him out. He thought there was no way he could lose. What no one expected is for for the fight to end so quickly.

On another note, this kid's parents are absolute scum. First, for raising a punk kid who will undoubtedly be stealing cars and robbing liquor stores soon, and second, for trying to sue for an incident that her scumbag of a kid initiated. Good parenting morons. Where is CPS now?

I had a similar situation happen.

Simply put: a kid hit me, twice. I did nothing, I was trying not to lose my spot as squad leader for an upcoming drill meet for JrROTC back in middle school. A teacher came out, saw me with a bloody lip and asked what happen. Next thing I know, I am being suspended for a WEEK because I didn't walk away. There was NO WHERE to walk to, because I was encircled by a very large number of students that were his friends. In retrospect, I should have beat the living hell out of him, but that time has come and gone. I got all that frustration out in the Army.

As for Mr. Casey here, I salute him! He did NOTHING violent. Self defense IS NOT the same as violent assault, which is exactly what this was. An assault. It was premeditated, just by having the camera turned on before the Rat-boy walked up to him makes it premeditated. Plain and simple. The school should not have suspended Casey, but I feel Rat-boy should be expelled for the remained of the year, and forced to retake the grade over.

Bullying is a terrible thing in schools. I know, I use to be the quite kid that got screwed with. Now I am not as quite anymore. People do not mess with me, ever. Not because I am huge, not because I am aggressive, but because I learned how to stand up for myself.

Casey should be given an award for putting a little punkass bully in his place.

Agreed that is possible.

Anyway i was just trying to bring another perspective to the table!

wow - i never expected 18 pages in 1 day. I thought that this was a topic that was not focussed on the doom and gloom of mother nature. It hit home with me as stated in my OP, but I was personally surprised to see so many of us admit that we were bullied during school years. Maybe because of academic/religious/or even our views differ from the mainstream (ala ATS), but it is great to read everyone's opinions, and although maybe Casey was going through hell - he has definitely brought the subject of school-yard bullying back into the forefront of the media. For that, if he has changed the ideals of one bully then he has won the battle and maybe his own personal war.

We all love a nice bit of poetic justice!

And it is fantastic that the issue is being brought into the forefront of the media. Hopefully this could make some other bullies think twice before picking a fight with someone they think won't fight back.

I can't believe so few people feel sorry for the kid getting body slammed. There are a lot of sad stories about your personal struggles with bullies and I feel for you guys I really do, but you guys might want to let that stuff go and make peace with your past enemies. To grow, you know? That's just my humble suggestion.

When can violence be condoned? When lives are on the line. Was Casey's, ever? No.

Like I said before, I feel bad for both of the kids. I can't stand to see anyone getting hurt, especially kids. I can't watch those reality shows where kids do dumb stuff and brake bones, or any violent movies. I could'nt even stand to watch this video more than once, I had to turn my head when i showed it to my husband. So yes I do feel bad for the little guy. I'm pretty sure kids who bully are suffering in some way. My best guess is emotional neglect from the parents, who have'nt had the time or the care to teach thier kids compassion, or the value of life.

Now this dosn't change my opinion of Cassey. I think he had every right to do what he did, and I dont think he should have anymore punishment than the manditory 3 day suspension. Cassy probably did feel his life was on the line. He's just a kid. If what people are saying is true, and this was an ongoing thing, I bet he laid in his bed everynight wishing he were dead. He might of already felt "dead" in a way that only someone in his shoes would understand.
Do you have kids? Would you honestly want your child to lay down and take that violent abuse? What would you tell your kid to do in that situation? Please don't say "Go tell a teacher", anyone who went to school knows this only makes things worse for a bullied kid

It looks like the smaller child is just messing with him, but I don't really know the story behind this. I agree he has the right to fight back but I think Casey could have made a better decision than body slamming the much smaller kid onto the concrete.

I think that it was a measured response. Casey used the only tools that were available, size and strength. The attacker was emboldened by his mates and guessed that, due to numerical superiority, Casey would not respond, thus making a good video to laugh about later.

Casey decided that enough was enough. He acted and pulled back. As I say, a measured resonse. Had he been a mindless thug, he would have followed up the attack with kicks and or punches, or even carried the fight to the other dickless wonders who were there, but no, he walked away.

I defy anyone to stand or attempt to walk away from a sustained attack without at least trying to fend the attacker off.
