I live in the Pacific Northwest near the Coast. I attempted to get some Potassium Iodide just for precaution, and I could not get any at all. I called the local drug store and they said you had to have a prescription. I left a message to the doctor for some Potassium Iodide. The doctors assistant called back and said, "they are looking into it and wouldn't give me a prescription at all". She said that "we still have 7 to 9 days before it gets here, and not to worry". We let you know. Why is it so hard to get Potassium Iodide? They make it sound like it's a controlled substance, or something. How do I get some?

I heard from a poster on another thread that the substance is used in concoctions of illegal substances (crystal meth I think it was). Maybe this is why the doctors are not writing prescriptions for it?

I live on the west coast in the portland area, ive tried to get the stuff too, but its really weird, i ask a rep if they have it, then they say hold on, then like some doctor comes into the picture and says no we dont carry that. Also there was the factor that you need the prescription. Ive also encounter a person asking what i need it for, cus of precautionary issues, and then there like oh we dont have that. Its like why didnt you just you didnt have it rather than ask me what i needed it for. Very odd in my opinion

I ordered some this morning from amazon.com. No prescription was necessary. I got two 28 day supplies. They were almost sold out when I ordered. I hope I never have to use them.

Edit: forgot to mention the total cost was $10.42 (including free shipping)

Why would one need a prescription - it's readily available on amazon.
I never heard that about it being used to make controlled substances.
I was just reading about it's health importance, the thyroid and being used as a cancer preventative, as well as it's disinfectant qualities. Seems like every household should have some.

I will check the natural food store near my house, I doubt they will have any though. The drug store did say that many people have called about it. I will probably end up having to order it online. It is kind of expensive with out a prescription.

I doubt there is "hoarding" going on, per se. What I have read indicates that much of what has been produced is in the Govt. stockpile, not the general market.

In any case, there were a few online sites yesterday that still had it in stock. Look around.

For the future, it pays to be prepared. This should be something that everyone learns from.

ETA: Good background info. to read here - though it's too late to buy from them.

You can get it off Ebay so you do not have to have a prescription. I have ordered 2 bottles from there and received them no problem?? Never heard of anyone trying to make anything illegal from them?

Most cold meds are now kept behind the counter, and you have to ask for them because of the meth problem. The radiation tabs do not have the medicine in them (I think) that they use for meth. I would really consider that the government is probably telling doctors to keep it on hand and only distribute it if they decide an area really needs it.

If it comes down to it the west coast will need it first, and they probably will ship all they have to these areas first. I feel that is why you are having a hard time finding it now. Everybody is going nuts, and this is going to cause a shortage. Also we have probably promise Japan that we would send "x" number of tablets their way, and that would also lower the amount available to our own people.

Keep us posted on your progress!!

Actually never thought of it before this nuclear incident.

Just a quick note about this topic. The Govt. has a large stock pile of (KI) but will you receive it in good time? Probably not!
So we ask where can we get a supply of (KI), The internet is full of sellers. However the draw back is that your order may not find you in good time.
IN A PINCH you can use "Tincture of Iodine" DO NOT INJEST, this is a poison!!!! If you must use this form of elemental Iodine you can paint approx. 8 to 10 ml on your abdomen and let the iodine absorb thru your skin. Or you can dip your finger up to the first knuckle and also receive the proper dosing via absorption.

This should only be done in an emergency 1 to 2 hrs prior to contamination

(KI) is considered a stable salt but can degrade over time. (KI) should be white in color and if it appears to have a yellowish tinge then it is no longer effective.

(KI) Can also be derived via fish, kelp extracts ( capsules and drops available from your natural health stores) and Kale.

Be careful with allergies. Some people are allergic to (KI) Hence using this ONLY in an emergency!

Hope this was helpfull, Please consult with your doctor

I called some natural/vitamin food and some places have them on back order. The places I called are getting more this week. I just think it kind of weird that you can't even get them from a pharmacy, nor will doctors prescribe them, but you can get it from a vitamin store? lol

Plenty of Potassium Iodide available online via Google shopping

KI is only good to counteract radioactive iodide and passes it through the bowels. Reactor isotopes also include uranium, plutonium, strontium, cesium, etc. If you inhale these isotopes (400 mSv+), a bad thyroid will be the least of your worries.

I ended up ordering mine from Ebay. It has been shipped, but I haven't received it yet. I do have a tracking number that shows it's en route so I think I trust the seller, lol! I think I got 220 for like $20. It is only 32mg so that will not make a full dose. I tried ordering mine from vitaminshoppe.com first, but after placing the order, I got an email saying that they were out of stock.

Anyway, if you are interested in ordering from Ebay, just go there and search for "potassium iodide." It is the same brand that I was going to get from vitaminshoppe and is actually a bit cheaper.

Like I said, I haven't received mine yet, but will be making sure that the originals seals and wrappers are in place before using, and would suggest the same for others who order from there (or anywhere!) The seller had good feedback though, and lots of it so that makes me feel a bit more safe.
