I purposefully waited a few days to post this question so I didn't "rock" the boat.

A few days ago a member started a thread apologizing for another thread he/she started speculating about another member. I thought it was commendable that they felt bad and didn't mind apologizing for their error. It was a stand up act IMO. However , the thread only lasted a few minutes before it was deleted.

I was just curious as to why it was taken down. Lots of folks would die before admitting a mistake and offering an apology for it. This person not only did this, but did it in "public" so to speak.

I can understand removing threads that attack, mock, and/or provoke other members, but why remove a thread with such a kind hearted gesture?

I am not questioning the mod's jobs by any means. I was just curious and will be grateful for any mod that takes the time to explain. Thanks in advance.

Threads about other members can be very problematic. Even when well intentioned they tend to single people out and can make people feel unduly scrutinized.

The U2U function is a much better method of voicing apologies.

I hope this helps.

It does help, and thank you for taking the time to answer.
It didn't even occur to me that a member would be embarrassed/scrutinized by receiving an apology. But I can see where that is possible since you pointed it out. Thanks again for explaining when you didn't have to.

I think a great place to make public apologies is in the Confessions Thread.

Its in RATS so not everybody can see it but, at least its a way to tell the ATS community that you're sorry for the way you behaved toward another member.

But then how can you ever achieve the glory of taking the high ground and publicly admitting you made a mistake?! No one will ever know that you are so awesome you can admit that you're wrong!
