What's wrong with Watching American Idol?

I am so sick of posters on ATS putting down people who watch American Idol or Idol itself. Saying we're too busy watching Idol to know what's going on in the world is plain ridiculous. Though that may be true for some blind sheeple. I guess most people on ATS can only devote their time and brains to ONE thing at a time. I guess us multitaskers are a rare bunch? I wouldn't think so. I think most people have a life outside ATS Whatever that may be, Don't you?

You can be highly intelligent and simply love music. Or, like me, have always loved vocal music and always wanted to become a singer. What better way to get some fufillment by watching others realize their dreams of becoming a singer? What better joy could one get that loves vocals then to see new talent? I admit the drama parts leave me on edge and I am just like "Get on with the performances already!" But this does not stop me from watching, and it does not make me a bobble-head sheeple either!

With some of you here everything is just black and white. There is no gray, but guess what? Most of all humanity does not live in black and white, most of humanity lives and breathes and grows in the GRAY!!!!! And nobody, and I can say this with 100+% full confidence, not one single person on the whole entire planet fits into any of those nice neat little boxes you all like to place people in. Sorry, but they, we, whatever, just DON'T!!!!

I agree, how a person wastes their life is completely up to them.

So what if it promotes and funds a lifestyle of shallowness, commercialism, distraction and ignorance.

Carry on. The man behind the curtain needs your attention.

Most people aren't saying that if you watch American Idol / Pro Sports / Celebrity Gossip, that you are suddenly a sheep. The point is, these things are the focus of millions of people! I highly doubt anyone here would ever think in such terms....Again, the point is, these are devices to pacify and blind the American people. They are not an automatic ticket to sheep city.

Well I for one go and do other things during commercials, and the only things I buy is what I have to. It really isn't commercial until they are signed artists. That's when the actual acts become sensationalized. But in the meantime you get to hear other singers from all over the country that you may not have gotten to ever hear perform. I am in a musical family. I didn't grow up in one, but I sought one out later in life, my hubby plays guitar, bass and sings, all my kids are learning and have learned multiple instruments. Too bad the music industry is so commercialized, however, does that take away from you listening to music? So you have denounced listening to all mainstream music right? IF you haven't then kindly, take a flying leap!

I agree with you OP, unfortunately we have a lot of single minded folks in the world. There is no middle ground for some people. It's either anti government and everything mainstream or complete sheepie brainwashed people. Yes American Idol is very shallow, but it's still fun to watch. This is the most talented group so far. So as long as you remember it's just a show and you don't get too wrapped up in it like some do you're good.

How so?

Are people really putting you down for watching "Idol"? Or is it really that they are pointing out the miserable fact that more people know the irrelevant details of the show and it's judges and contestants than know about WTC 7? I'm tired of ___holes out there in the real world acting like I'm a crazy person when I say I do not trust my freedom, health, and the truth to a bunch of soulless greedy corporations and their salesmen (gov't) and their favorite pet (media). Especially, when they have no clue what the Bill Of Rights actually says but can tell me every intricate detail about the life of some worthless entertainer. I want to put a gun in my mouth when they cry over someone's "dream" of being the next "idol" being ended but no time or thought at all gets wasted on the millions of Arabs LIVES that have been ended or destroyed because of the endless wars and policies they are just too busy to think about.

I think OP is referring to the close-minded type of people on here that label anyone who watches such shows as American idol as a sheep, throwing reason and logic out the window. Some people are so focused on conspiracies and sticking it to the man that they forget to see the even bigger picture: Life is short, enjoy it. And for some people American idol is enjoyable.

You've got a point, for sure. HAHA but at least when they look at me crazy I can go well did you see Idol last night and such and such. Then they forget about the crazy conspiracy stuff you said a second ago lol!
I simply watch for the singers everything else, well it don't interest me!

That's exactly right. You said exactly what my point was. I tried to star you, but I seem to be having issues with my PC and it doesn't want to register the star.
Life is too short to be enveloped in the gloom and doom conspiracy stuff all the time, to place everyone on the planet into nice neat little boxes, to spend your time worrying and wondering...preparing is a wonderful thing but so is joy. What joy does one get when all they see are the negatives? Everything is a waste of time except preparing for the worst and talking about it. That is depressing!!!!

Good point. We are living in a fantasy world here in America. But no one is really happy and we trying to fill our miserable lives with fantasy shows like American Idol & Jersey Shore to be happy. Why do you think there has been 11 whatever seasons of it? People keep needing more of it because it only provides temporary happiness. It's a prescription that treats the symptoms but masks the real problem. True happiness only comes through things like family, freedom, and God.

There are some who watch the show and see it for what it is; a means to gain temporary happiness without giving sustenance to the soul. We don't put too much energy in to it and are simply entertained for an hour. And some are enveloped by it and become the archetype. To their defense, It's hard to not get sucked in. And this goes for all of our current pop/media culture.

Haha no problem man, I gave you a star anyways. I'm glad there are people that see the world the way I do.

Quite honestly, "American Idol" and "Dancing With The Stars are the only 2 network shows that I can name where millions of people race home to be programed. I'm sure there are more like the Jersey Shore but I don't watch television so I wouldn't know for certain.

Sorry, but I consider Idol, Survivor and almost all the "reality" shows akin to submitting to a lobotomy. But whatever floats your boat: I watch "Deadliest Catch".
