The Bitter Side of Diet Soda: Strokes

www.livescience.com

Drinking diet soda is associated with a 50-percent increase in stroke risk, according to a study presented earlier this month at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles.

"Now the health police tell us we can't drink Diet Coke," captures the tone on many of the diet blogs.

The study is flawed, as the article admits, people are not always drinking diet sodas because they are health-conscious so much as that many already have health issue by being diabetic or overweight. But if this study will convince some people to get Aspertame out of their diet then perhaps it is not such a bad news item to have circulating.

Hold the sugar and corn syrup and pass the aspartame. Some doctors actually encourage dieters to drink diet soda to cut calories instead of recommending zero-calorie water or tea.

If doctors tell us to do these things then it must be good, right? I mean, they are the trained experts. Whose health is most important to them though? I sometimes wonder about that.

Doctors tell us these things because sick patients pay for their house, cars, bills....

I actually talked to my dad about the dangers of aspartame recently and he looked into it and vows not to drink it anymore.

I tried doing the same for my mom and she said she would stop buying it but I went over to her house the other night to pick up some extra tickets to a hockey game her and my stepfather were not going to use and there were two fresh cases of diet soda in the fridge....

Some people just don't care.

You do though, you confiscated them....right? And then explained why....right?

Yup, aspartame is POISON. I never stand on the sidelines while friends or family unwittingly consume the stuff and will read labels to check.

What I have found to bring me a chuckle about this article and another I have read is
Diet Coke is advertising for a heart healthy foundation for women,.

I switched from aspartame-sweetened diet soda to one that uses Splenda instead. I did it for cost-saving reasons, but accidentally discovered that aspartame was a major cause of the migraines I was having 3 or 4 times a week!

Since getting off the aspartame, I'm happy to say the migraines have decreased by about 95% - I only have a mild one about once every 3 weeks.

Bonus: The "Shasta" brand diet sodas are delicious!
