Talking of stories one has heard, my atheist son, who is a cardiac nurse, has spoken to many patients who have had near death experiences, and from what he told me, the most surprising thing is the fact that everyone was calm and peaceful!
No panic, no regret... The way he put it was "they don't care at all, not even about their families".
That doesn't say anything about what might come later, obviously, but it would seem that it's true - without the body, strong emotions don't exist..
