Scientists have created an anti-laser device. Used to absorb incoming lasers, can possibly be shrunk to 6 microns!!

The device will be used more for optical computers and other mainstream purposes, so sorry to the sci-fi fans

says prof stone "This is something that absorbs lasers. If a ray gun was intended to kill you, it's going to kill you," Professor Stone said in the ABC report.

pretty neat, however, if the technology exists to absorb a laser, why would the ray gun kill you? (nvm..thanks phage)

i'm also looking forward to those optical computers!!

Because...

The team focused two laser beams with a specific frequency into a cavity containing a silicon wafer that acted as a ‘loss medium.’ The wafer aligned the light waves in such a way that they became perfectly trapped, bouncing back and forth indefinitely until they were eventually absorbed and transformed into heat.

www.digitaljournal.com...

What does a laser beam do when it hits you? It turns into heat. I don't think a silicon wafer is going to absorb all of the energy of a weapons grade laser even if you managed to match it exactly. This is a very well controlled situation.

Thats a pretty neat technology been created,
I wonder how it will shape out lives in the future.

I would rather have a mirror then a energy absorbing vest in laser warfare!

True but,

It's a first step towards a weapon defense. Give them a little credit for getting this far.

Just makes me wonder whos lasers are to be defended against

Well an immediate laser defense application would be against Police speed traps. Take the laser and nullify it so that they don't get any return, there is nothing high lower about the laser law enforcement uses.
Combine that with a radar emitter tuned for the approximate frequencies that law enforcement uses and you'll have yourself a stealth vehicle ready for all your driving needs.

don't they already have laser jamming devices for speed traps? and it wouldn't be ultimate stealth unless you could cloak the car in invisibility.. but that could be a little dangerous

There are systems available to combat the laser speed guns.
I believe the laser countermeasures work by shooting lR over the numberplate and rear panel that it wont be able to distinguish the object, like shinning a spotlight at the receiver.

By using this laser absorbing technology it would allow you to absorb the bulk of the energy so you will be in a way "stealth"
Like all absorbing technology it will have to be tuned, the police or whomever will just change the laser frequency on there speed traps.
