It was also very shallow, as earthquakes go - 4kms - the shallow ones always do more damage, sadly.

I am an Australian watching this horror from the safety of an apartment in Sydney.

I felt sick watching the footage. The death toll will probably rise.

In times such as these you know there is NO difference between Aussies and Kiwis, we are all ANZACS.

My heart goes out to the rescuers and all the good people of the world who have relatives unnacounted for. Some of you are on this website. Please don't let the trolling religious whack jobs and conspiracy NUTJOBS offend you they just want attention like little 3 year olds. [There is a time and a place, show some respect maggots].

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand -- The earthquake that struck Christchurch has caused some 30 million tons of ice to break off from New Zealand's biggest glacier.

Here's a live streaming link for international viewers -

tvnz.co.nz...

Also, I did an interview with BBC news last night here's the link -

www.bbc.co.uk...

There have been aftershocls all night, especially a few big ones around 3.15am. Not much we can do today except stay at home and watch the news come in.

All residents have been told to stay away from central Christchurch and to keep the roads clear.

I'm religious but I don't see this as an act of God against New Zealand, if I see parallels then something must be said and that is what I feel people are trying to do for non religious people it looks like trolling. There are warnings and signs in the Bible that includes places and nations and tribes and the effect of the earth during the end times.
Trust me if things look similar people will say, but by that time it might be little late if people are blinded from the truth and grand deceptions to come.

But yes I hope NZ and Australia unite and help each other and their neighbours at times of need.

There have been many aftershocks and not small ones by any means. I am sure the scene has changed from yesterday. Sad to start hearing a death toll. My heart is with those in New Zealand, I find it difficult to look at the people hurting so bad, traumatized and wounded - some walking as if they don't know where to go. The buildings look very dangerous to be near. Would it be safer if they were in the countryside away from buildings and large trees - is there a place or way to get them there. I haven't seen many children, where are the children?

Many people spent the night in makeshift shelters away from the large builings. The CBD is closed to the public and anyone trying to enter gets arrested.

As for the children, they were mostly in School when the quake struck and were fine. Mostly be city workers and Tourists that were involved in the CBD.

It was a much colder night than usual at this time of year and it rained heavily too, so that would have hampered the rescue efforts.

Its calm and sunny this morning, so hopefully with all the help arriving etc, we should see much more rescues today.

Aftershocks continue to shake us as i type.

Its dawn here right now, the official death toll has been set at 38 dead. But as rescuers go about there jobs estimates have been put 300 + only time will tell. Reports are coming in of a large number of amputations being performed on trapped people. The Mayor (Bob Parker) is requesting that there now be a mass exodus from the city and to try and stay put and help your neighbours the best you can.

On a personal note I was at home in a Suburb called Northwood (North Christchurch). I can tell you I could only think about my 2 children and were they alright. My drive was probably one of the worst things I ever had to do. Thinking my kids, whey is everyone so slow at driving, my wife are you alright. All up what normally takes a 10 minute drive to the schools was nearly an hour there and 2 hrs back. My wife turned up at her parents a few minutes before I did will the kids.

I have never been so happy to be with my family.

I can honestly say the quote below really fits right now.

With all the damage I see in the vid I find it difficult to believe there is electric anywhere in the area. I am glad you still have it so you can keep us informed. Is your house safe to be in - have you suffered damage from the aftershocks - the aftershock are large and numerous - my nerves would be so frayed. I feel for all involved in this disaster.

I am so glad you are connected with your family again and they and you are alright.

I just read the death toll was at 60 plus. Sad about the amputations, this must have
been such torment but it does save lives. I honor those who go into the rubble to
treat and rescue people.

hmm im really annoyed at the journalists on this. they are making a meal of it
the mayor going into great detail about how to cope and what to do in this emergency.
telling them all this info like drinking water. where to go for medical attention blah blah blah.
then says at the end of his rant. yeah so its going to b expected that almost the entire city will be without power all night. so.. who was he talking to? no one was able to watch him on the tv. cause not only was there tv and house crushed. but they dont have any power..... jesus!.

also telecom are bastards. dont allow free calling to chch peeps. instead offer free "call diverting" which you obviously have to call them up to sort out with your account and where its being forwarded to so you can guess. 10 people call @ once overloaded. let alone 40 thousand, and furthermore bar outgoing calls. you could call ppl in chch but they couldnt call out. and even teh news told people to save your cellphone batteries. USE FACEBOOK. is what they said. no lies. while they call a woman who is trapped an talk with her on the news live. for 5 minutes. wasting her cellphone battery. then hang up on her. leaving her there. (oh wait call her back, we forgot to ask where u are?, oh no cell batt, bad luck) also there were navy in littleton harbour previous to this happening. also around the same time 200 whales washed up all round new zealand. and also at the same time as a huge CME i was told. or solar flare. i think the govt is secretly having a feild day with this. gettin an idea of how long it takes and monitoring all communication to see how ppl react in times like this. watching monitoring communications. spend lots of money. oh yeah another funny thing. during the news they cut away for the buisness report. guess what. NZ $ instantly down against EVERYTHING. but guess what. FLETCHER BUILDING> the only one to go UP. hahah no way!!> i wonder why?

i think chch people wont be allowed to leave, and move to another city. they will be quarantined soon. other cities cant handle the influx.

The mayor was talking last night to the General Manager of Orion Energy who said that about 50% of the city was without power. To expect repairs to 80% of the city in 24 - 48 hrs. Many of the substations shut down automatically when a large quake is sensed. They then can only be reset manually once a proper check has been done.

I know you were just venting an angry rant with the media and all there BS. For know we just have to grin and bear it and help those that we can.

Have to give the man his dues (Mayor Bob Parker) he does do well with info for the general public in times of crisis.

Keep strong everyone here in Christchurch, we will get through this...

They are talking at the moment on One about excelleration and how this quake was actually bigger than the one of 7. He did give an explaination and figures but I got lost I'm afraid. The shake was much more violent. It was also on a different fault. Perhaps our experts can give a run down of this.
Also, there was a guy on there talking to his traqpped wife on the phone. I really would like to know if she gets out safely please.
Bless you all, we are thinking of you even if we can do nothing to help.

I think your possibly overreacting somewhat on those ideas. You really think our government of all governments would be doing something shady, sure they arent that benign but this is NZ

The dollar dropped the way it did since you have to realize this will be a big impact on business within the country and that makes those who invest in that sort of stuff itchy. If we appear to be unstable people will pull out of here and that makes everything drop. It happened during the other earthquakes more so for this one... thats the way business works I guess, they wont not act in their best interests simply out of moral kindness to the country.

Not sure what your problem with our media is either, its a might site better than some other countries, they cut that woman off because they where affraid of wasting her battery and of course she would have passed on info prior to the interview being put up live, have a little faith in humanity
. Also dont forget Parkers little press speeches arent JUST for TV, there is the old battery powered radio, and alot of them should still be working. They get the info out on every medium they can, and those that watch/hear pass it on. Imagine if the mayor did nothing... oh the cries of blue murder that would create.

Ranting at a time like this over things like that is a rather counter productive thing to do.

Just a couple of things does not make sense,

*The wife on the phone I am not sure what if she is out yet, I heard that too on the news, i thought she was a news journalist stuck at her desk or something that is what it sounded like, correct me if I'm wrong.

Okay just found out;
www.bbc.co.uk...

Trapped under her office desk, Anne Voss told a New Zealand TV station: "I rang my kids to say goodbye. It was absolutely horrible.
"My daughter was crying and I was crying because I honestly thought that was it. You know, you want to tell them you love them, don't you?"

She said she could hear other people alive in the building, and had called out to them.

*They said a school building calapsed, were there any children in there, what time did it actually happen over there? Were kids at school?

*My BBC news confirms 65 deaths so far been like that for a few hours.

* 6.3 on the richter scale, are they sure that is right because it looks a lot stronger, even the roads have broken in half so this looks different.

For example what is the point calling it a 9.5 if it is miles deep and does nothing, I'm not sure how they measure earthquakes these days they should at least X it by how near it was to the surface.
