An old friend of mine told me once that we used to hear the very first turn of a Russian submarine's screws, and follow its first patrol until it was
ready to go back home- to the point that we knew everything about Russian submarines- not just the type but the individual one ship- right down to all
the operational tendencies and bad habits of the crew.
I guess the good old days are gone. If this had happened in a communist nation, especially during the cold war, there would be a series of
"unfortunate accidents" for the intelligence officials at fault.
