The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved plantings of three genetically engineered (GE) crops in as many weeks, including Monsanto Co.'s Roundup Ready sugar beets and alfalfa that are engineered to tolerate Roundup Ready weed-killing herbicide.

The USDA on February 11 also legalized, without restriction, the world's first GE corn crop meant for biofuel production. Biotech giant Syngenta's Event 3272 seed corn will simplify ethanol production and is not meant to feed animals or humans.

The approvals flew in the face of legal and regulatory challenges posed by GE crop opponents and members of the agricultural industry. Opponents fear the GE crop varieties could contaminate conventional food crops and promote the overuse of herbicides like the glyphosate-based Roundup and more toxic chemicals used to kill glyphosate-resistant weeds.

Monsanto won a victory on February 4 when the USDA partially deregulated Roundup Ready sugar beets. A federal court in August 2010 temporarily banned the beets and ordered the USDA to re-review the environmental impacts of the Roundup Ready sugar beets as the result of a lawsuit filed by farmers and environmental groups.

That is really beyond messed up. Monsanto is going to, almost single-handedly, destroy our food supply. Will ANYONE react to this illegal, unethical greed? I cannot believe what is happening in the US Govt.

In the USA government, outrageous that planetwide we all suffer the "seeds" of this corporation.

This could lead to the future GMO contamination of all feed crops, affecting meat, poultry, milk, eggs-there's simply no end to it. And even if you're growing your own food, contaminated seeds will ultimately be unavoidable. The more you think about this the worse it gets.

ically Modified Foods of Monsanto / Documentary Video

Indeed Monsanto practically runs the FDA.

Indeed. Its all about money. But someday I hope the owners of these kind of companies will have to eat their money for food.

Monsanto makes me sick acting like they are some sort of global food hero saving the third world countries when really they are killing them slowly and trying to make there local crops obselete. One corp can not own all the seeds in the world and thats what they want. People are so proud of science and all of there break throughs but it is also a weapon that can be used against people.

There are just too many conflicts of interest going on with the the the FDA and Monsanto for proper accountability and scrutiny of this potentially devastating technology. I would like to see the United Nations put together a board to manage this issue as they do with Nuclear technology. There are just to many stories of corruption and cover up going on with some bad effects already taking place. Perhaps GMO does have a part to play in this world, but when profits is put above science it is only a matter of time until TSHTF.

Take cuttings from an unmodified source and grow your own food, the more people that do this, the less we will need these criminals supplies.

Anybody wants to help the environment send a very good and strong message to Monsanto and stay away from their killer crops.

States like mine in Ga have banned Monsanto GM crops already.

The problem is that many countries already sold their "souls". Most the 3rd ones.

Their government has sold their souls but the people are still fighting and fighting strong, many farmers in developing countries are giving a finger to Monsanto and for that many are dying at the hands of their own sold out governments.

Aye, but how long until the sugar from those Sugar Beets makes it into the supply chain and then vanishes behind the label "Sugar".

Eventually I will have to grow all my own food and bake my own bread. *sigh*

Like everything, you have to learn to spot the junk on your manufacture food supplies. just like corn syrup it will come under many names.

Yep. We saw this one coming. Beets and apples were next on the list. Thanks for the update.

They are destroying our food chain. Anyone paying the slightest bit of attention can see this. They must be stopped. But how? Who's going to do it if the Feds keep allowing this? I'm making noise by writing Congress. Are you?

I don't know if anyone has watched this documentary, but it will reveal even more about what Monsanto is doing for the world, and what they plan to do with the world.

The World According to Monsanto

I loved watching this because it shows you how the GM food industry really affects some of the other countries around the world. If any of you have time to watch it, it isn't a bad sit down... it kept my attention the whole time I was watching it. It goes to farmer's perspectives as well as people just living near mass developments.

I think it's pretty intense where this whole control of seed thing is going, and it could be a terrible thing in the long run if only a few companies own all the seed that exists in the world. Controlling virtually all the food we eat after killing off any natural diversity?

Glad this thread was brought up to let some others see what is going on with the GM foods industry.

I think Monsanto practically runs the FDA. Write to congress is practically "lost of time" to me. I respect your effort but I dont believe in our democracy anymore.
