On Feb. 13th at 1738 UT, sunspot 1158 unleashed the strongest solar flare of the year so far, an M6.6-category X-ray irradiance magnitude blast. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded an intense flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation. The source of this activity, sunspot 1158 is growing rapidly.

...The cloud will likely hit Earth's magnetic field on or about Feb. 15th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

Searched for the story as it was published two days ago.

This is the largest solar flare of the year (2011), but I wish they would say within the last 365 days.

Adding text for more content: Looks like doomsayers and chicken littles will climb onboard the event as proof that the end is near. Maybe something about 2012, or a space alien that lives on the interior world of the Sun will land on earth soon. Maybe something about coronal matter buffeting about earths' magnetic lines and pole shift being caused by the external environment. Why not, maybe the centerline of the galaxy is the true north, and as the solar system crosses the centerline in 2012 all poles will flip to point north again. But I digress, the story is about a solar flare.
