Switzerland is holding a referendum aimed at restricting gun ownership.
If approved, it would end the long tradition of Swiss men keeping their army weapons at home both during and after compulsory military service.
Weapons would have to be registered, stored in armouries and owners would have to show they know how to use them.
Supporters of the controls say suicides and gun crime would be reduced. Those against say locking weapons in arsenals would undermine trust in the army.

The Swiss gun lobby is strong, and until now all attempts at gun control have been defeated.
But when Corinne Rey-Bellet and her brother were buried side-by-side in their home town, on the day that should have been Alain's wedding day, even the most enthusiastic gun owners began to waver.
For the first time, opinion polls show a majority of Swiss want the guns out of their homes, and stored in a safer place.
The days when every Swiss man had a weapon, in the garage next to the kids' bikes or the lawnmower, may be numbered.
About a quarter of Switzerland's 1,300 suicides each year involved a gun, according to federal statistics. The exact number of military-issued weapons involved is disputed, but those calling for tighter rules claim they account for between 100 and 200 suicides a year, mostly among men.
It is not known how many military-issued guns are involved in homicides each year, though Switzerland's gun murder rate is relatively low — just 24 in 2009, or about 0.3 firearms homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. By comparison, the U.S. rate in 2007 was 4.2 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The real purpose of this initiative is to weaken the militia army and withdraw the state's confidence in its citizens," says Markus Mueller, spokesman for a group of former and current senior Swiss military officers.
Mueller calls the proposal a left-wing conspiracy to weaken Swiss democracy. "Only a disarmed people can be oppressed. That's why we're against this," he told The Associated Press.

The Military Officer has a more probable reason:

And although Switzerland's overall crime rate is low by European standards, supporters of greater gun control point to high levels of suicide using guns.

Good for them for keeping them.
The gun control people should be deported. Arms(guns in the modern era) are part of the Swiss culture and it should be a crime to try to abolish a part of the Swiss culture.
Guns are what saved Switzerland from being invaded by Hitler.
The soccer moms are apparently gaining ground in Switzerland so their little snowflakes can't be hurt...
