Thanks bud this is what I've been trying to tell people. It's ment to be a joyful event but we're all seeing it as dooms day.

It's going to be really close in October, but my only concern is the clouds that are likely to be around that time of year will get in the way of seeing it through my telescope. 8" dobs for those that are interested and you know... understand a bit about the sky.
You guys do realise that far bigger things have come far closer with absolutely zero negative effect, right?
Where's the science behind this (*astronomically TINY*) thing causing a pole shift? What possible reason could there be for that to happen?
To anyone with even a basic understanding of cosmology *none* of the scaremongering on sites like ATS makes any sense.
It's an *amazing* opportunity to get out your binoculars, telescope or just your bare eyes and look at something wizz past us.It should be a joyful & awesome event, instead loads of you guys are trying to scare people for absolutely no reason - this thread is a prime example of how lack of education & understanding combined with a big dose of misinformation can lead to fear.
Get a grip on yourselves and relax everybody, everything is going to be fine.
Caltech scientist William Reach, who led the Spitzer observations, [of the above comet said in a telephone interview with space.com] " the big chunks coming off the comet move backward before dispersing, something that is not predicted in existing computer models"

Isn't there already pictures of the comet.

This is this issue in my opinion. We have no information on the composition or size of this thing. If it's 100% Iron Ferrite and the size of Jupiter it could pose a problem, however if it's a giant ice ball then we have nothing to worry about...

The Earth is actually 97,000,000 miles from the sun....
NOT 149,000,000.
I'm pretty sure at this stage those guys can distinguish a comet from a huge planet like Jupiter.

There are, but a tiny glowing orb doesn't tell us much
