The Earth is actually 97,000,000 miles from the sun....
NOT 149,000,000.

I don't get how a comet that far away could have any effect on the Earth.

Frankly i'm a little more worried about it get very close on October 19th.

Peace.

It's going to be really close in October, but my only concern is the clouds that are likely to be around that time of year will get in the way of seeing it through my telescope. 8" dobs for those that are interested and you know... understand a bit about the sky.

You guys do realise that far bigger things have come far closer with absolutely zero negative effect, right?

Where's the science behind this (*astronomically TINY*) thing causing a pole shift? What possible reason could there be for that to happen?

To anyone with even a basic understanding of cosmology *none* of the scaremongering on sites like ATS makes any sense.

It's an *amazing* opportunity to get out your binoculars, telescope or just your bare eyes and look at something wizz past us.It should be a joyful & awesome event, instead loads of you guys are trying to scare people for absolutely no reason - this thread is a prime example of how lack of education & understanding combined with a big dose of misinformation can lead to fear.

Get a grip on yourselves and relax everybody, everything is going to be fine.
Thanks bud this is what I've been trying to tell people. It's ment to be a joyful event but we're all seeing it as dooms day.

Nothing to worry about really but consider that some comets break up and become more like a train than a bullet. You could easily miss the locomotive but still run smack into one of the following cars.

Comet 73P/Schwassman-Wachmann 3 image from taken from May 4 to 6 [2006]shows at least distinct 36 fragments.
NASA/JPL-Caltech

Caltech scientist William Reach, who led the Spitzer observations, [of the above comet said in a telephone interview with space.com] " the big chunks coming off the comet move backward before dispersing, something that is not predicted in existing computer models"

JPL Small Body Database

Just click on the player controls and the days will advance forward or backwards and show you the orbit of Elenin.

Fully agreed,
In March the distance is too great to affect the planet more than the fart of a fly could.
October 15 - 31 the distance is a little discerning as it passes along the front of earths orbital.
If this thing has a strong enough gravitational pull, that would be the time for the shift.
Then again who knows what the Asteroid Belt will do to its trajectory.
Guess we will wait and see.

This is this issue in my opinion. We have no information on the composition or size of this thing. If it's 100% Iron Ferrite and the size of Jupiter it could pose a problem, however if it's a giant ice ball then we have nothing to worry about...

Thanks.

People like yourself are bang on correct - it's potentially going to be brilliant. I've never seen a *really* close comet through my telescope yet and I'm quite excited.

I've edited my post a bit - it sounded a bit er, harsh when I read it back.

Fun fact:

Elenin means destitution in German,
painful, wretched in Norwegain
let out in Hungarian

The best any Comet could do is give the earth a slight wobble, but it would have to be so close it could ring the door bell. And Comets are primarily made of Ice not Iron, even a large Iron Asteroid would have Buckleys of triggering a shift.

The Pole will shift when it feels like it, and it will happen because it's liquid and just sloshing around. Just as it has done several times in the Past.

Could see something large early morning before Sunrise. Thought it was the North Star but it was brighter than that. Have two telescopes but it could be seen easily with the naked eye. Object was stationary not an aircraft or helicopter. Observed the object for at least 20 minutes with no discernible movement. Do not believe it was Mars or Venus.

Very bright object... heh

interesting... It definately caught my attention, and i'm a skeptic about anything overtly disasterous.

There are a fair few photographs, more will come up in coming weeks and months.

There's an interesting article about the discovery here...

I'm pretty sure at this stage those guys can distinguish a comet from a huge planet like Jupiter.

Hi,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I've been reading ATS for about a year now, but I've been interested in conspiracy theories for about a decade now.

My personal views on this? Well come March 16th 2011 or December 22nd 2012, I'm sure we'll all wake up, have a cup of coffee, log on here and see that someone is telling us to avoid June 10th 2015 because they had a 'bad feeling'.

Now don't get me wrong or think of me as rude here. I'm a firm believer in conspiracy theories and our right to question authority and dig up what's really happening. But the more I visit this site, I see people here who just see a conspiracy or something strange in absolutely anything or everything, and unfortunately I'm started to be switched off to it.

I'm not saying a pole shift won't occur on these date, it may well do, but I can't predict the future, talk to spirits, or obtain these 'feelings' I keep hearing about. So I guess when the time comes, like the other 7,000,000,000 or so people on Earth, I guess I'll just have to deal with it as you can't really run away from a global catastrophe!

How about this, if, as is predicted, we've only got a month left, let's get on with living, quit our jobs, spend our money, tell the people we love how we feel and generally enjoy ourselves because if the end is nigh, I don't want to be the guy sitting in the office as a giant tidal wave hits the glass thinking 'didn't see that coming today'...

I know I'll get flamed for this post, but if I'm wrong, tell me on the 16th.

You'd be surprised actually, that little glowing glob (originally discovered by an amateur astronomer - a Russian guy called Leonid Elenin) allows us to calculate its orbit.

From that we can figure out its varying apparent magnitude as it moves towards and away from the Sun, we can roughly figure out its mass, composition (from the spectrum of light it reflects off the sun), when it'll be displaying a tail etc etc etc.... and the more observations we have, the more we can refine the data.

Everything we know about everything in the sky comes from images of tiny tiny blobs...

- this link shows you the original image, captured remotely by an amatuer Russian astronmer using an 18" telescope in New Mexico.

The women say's it was her guild, A spirit guild, can be seen as an angel! What guilds show is 100% accurate truthful, Yes it does boil down to inturpertataion, there not really any instructions as to "how to inturpet" Were always in states of ignorance, no different any alien given you galaltic directions and designs to get there, Your over your head when they start useing a stick. lol You might get the just of it, the concept. Intution plays a big part in being able to feel for an answer, or the direction for an answer, the ability to ask more questions as you go along.
like putting a puzzle toegther understanding each piece to get the picture. It was a warning about it, but it might have to do with another piece not seen yet or realized. the number 22 was there as well as 1, the guild set the stick on fire to bend it or was that another piece not realized perhaps another comet inter sects on the 22nd of march or a solar flare reaches out at 22 degrees to strike the comet.
