NASA has opened online voting for the agency's OPTIMUS PRIME Spinoff Award student video contest. The public is invited to vote for its favorite videos, made by students in grades three through eight, developed to help educate America's youth about the benefits of NASA's technologies. NASA is using the correlation between Hasbro's TRANSFORMERS property and commercialized agency "spinoffs" to help students understand how technology developed for space and aeronautics "transforms" into what is used on Earth. More than 190 children from 31 states have submitted creative videos describing their favorite agency technology from NASA's 2009 Spinoff publication. The students also documented why their video should be selected to win the NASA OPTIMUS PRIME trophy.

wow transformers, i used to love that as a kid and i show all the old cartoons to my kid now, although starscream was much cooler than optimus prime but maybe that would give the wrong message.

I grew up watching transformers, loved to play with my brother for hours on end where we'd made up all this fiction. Years later I realized how powerful an influence the stories were, there are so many hidden messages. Just take a look at the Matrix, why doesn't every autobot have one? That's right because there can only be one chosen to carry the one making all others submissive and never able to go beyond Optimus, never a chance to grow, they all stay the same for centuries. One special autobot who has something while all the other's don't. And why is there only 1 female (besides a few that run around on cybertron - I'd run and hide too from thousands of male transformers if I were a female robot lol).

And ofcourse there's Megatron, leader of all evil, the gun that never commits any evil himself but instead has a 2nd in command who can wield his power in gun form. Such symbolism.
