I live in Scotland and have travelled extensively, living in a static caravan a stone's through from Machrahanish and it is not operational,
except for celebrity flights who want to visit the golf course there. It is the largest landing strip in the UK though and hearingt from locals, it
has an underground system that travels at least 10 miles to the port at Campbelltown, with quarters for personnel to live etc....
I often wondered why it is not operational as it does look derelict as the buildings are in disrepair? I have watched from my caravan and NEVER saw
any movement, vehicles or anything unusual from the airport.
In the early nineties we had our caravan on the coast near Kilberry on that peninsula, and we did see weird flying objects which often hovered above
our campsite. The military base was operational back then.
Other than the UK bases up north (can't recall their locations) that is the only military bases there is in the UK. Though sometimes the US Army,
Navy etc.... uses the base near Stranraer, West Freugh, which in times gone by we watched military exercises on Wig Bay that seemed strange as they
bombed targets in the water that were made to look like to me as USO's (lights in the sea that shone up)!!!
We heard the conversations on our scanner from the pilots and the base which seemed odd as they gung ho acted like they were on Top Gun., giving
themselves names like Iceman etc...
Horses for courses I suppose!
