Just kidding.

If only! I loved the first two games, and to not get the chance to finish the story really is a bit of a bummer to say the least.

Anyone else a fan of Shenmue?

Yeah, an adventure game where you played a Japanese guy called Ryo Hazuki, who's out to avenge the death of his father amongst other things. It was pretty big news at the time because a hell of a lot of money went into making the game(s) and they promised features that hadn't been seen in a game up until that point. They delivered some of this but not enough for a lot of people, so it's kind of a love/hate thing really, though it does have a huge fan base.

Personally I thought they were awesome, perhaps aided by the fact that I'm intrigued with Japanese culture. It's now been 10 years since the 2nd installment, and despite a massive campaign by fans it doesn't look like were ever going to get the chance to finish the story.

I vaguely remember that game (was it on Dreamcast?). I remember you could go up to a vending machine and press a button and a drink would come out. It was really impressive at the time. I laugh now having experienced the manipulatable worlds of oblivion and fallout 3, etc..

Actually, I remember when I was younger, they had video game consoles at Lowes, and that was the first time I got to see and play Super Mario World on the SNES. It blew my mind with it's amazing graphics and detail. What a marvelous modern age we live in! Hehe.

I can barely fathom where the video game industry is headed. The amount of detail and realism they can include and the sheer SIZE of some of the game worlds.

I will have to root around and see if I can dig up shenmue. Thanks for the memories, however false advertising in your thread titles is probably not the best direction to go at ATS. Maybe something like : "Shenmue 3 Announced (I wish...).

Yeah, I actually thought that moments after I posted...but of course you can't edit the thread title!

Shenmue was probably the best sandbox game of it's time, although the areas were actually quite small, certainly in comparison to the games of today you mentioned.

Are you an RPG/open world fan then?

No, but the game was excellent and a good idea.

Yeah, open world is the best. Although, it eats your time. I guess it's sad that I have to seek out more freedom in video game worlds since my real world freedom is eroding away. And that's probably because I waste too much time playing video games, instead of doing something worth while! Sorry, had to get all "ATS" there for a minute just for good measure.

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is one of my favorite games, and then Fallout 3 of course. A lot of people complain about those games because they don't hold your hand and they're afraid to wonder off the path. Some of the best stuff was only discovered by aimless wondering into the wastes.
