It would be logistical nightmare for the government to attempt to round up every civilian owned weapon in America. As it stands, right now there are 311,000,000 people in the United States. Of them, an estimated 250,000,000 own at least one firearm.

With the available manpower, it would take decades to round up all those guns. And then gun owners would just hide their guns or resist, turning the confiscation procedures into a bloodbath.

No, more likely, if you wanted to shut down gun ownership, you would stop the mass production of ammunition. This would mean that only a handful of people would be able to produce their own with reloading equipment, so long as the gunpowder, primer and projectiles are available. And the average joe would be out of luck.
