Strong 7.1 magnitude quake hits Chile, no injuries

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A major earthquake of 7.1 magnitude hit central Chile on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties, local emergency officials said.

"Up until now we don't have any information of deaths or major damage. A tsunami alert is ruled out," said Felipe Plaza, duty officer at Chile's Onemi emergency office.

Wow, first major earthquake of the year, I hope this can go without a tsunami or too many casualties, but that's life. I hope well to everyone over there and gets the propper medical or emergency rescue, not too much yet though, deffinitely hope it doesn't end up like the last one, and minimal devestation. Don't have much to say until further info...

just found it...4 big earthquakes in the past two weeks...shouldn't that set off alarm bells or something?

Sorry, first one I saw on the news as being a major looking one, so didn't really bother looking at any other sources. So yeah, not the first one, thanks for correcting me.

I think u misunderstood me, i was just stating that there have been a lot of big earthquakes lately and this should be alarming people....this sort of stuff doesn't happen often

5 earthquakes with greater than 7.0 magnitude in two weeks should concern people.
