This letter was posted on Moore's website on July 4th. Whether or not you agree with Michael Moore, or his policies, what he has to say about freedom of speech and oppression by those in power is very valid.

Those who absconded with our flag now use it as a weapon against those who question America's course. They remind me of that famous 1976 photo of an anti-busing demonstrator in Boston thrusting a large American flag on a pole into the stomach of the first black man he encountered. These so-called patriots hold the flag tightly in their grip and, in a threatening pose, demand that no one ask questions. Those who speak out find themselves shunned at work, harassed at school, booed off Oscar stages. The flag has become a muzzle, a piece of cloth stuffed into the mouths of those who dare to ask questions.

I think it's time for those of us who love this country and everything it should stand for to reclaim our flag from those who would use it to crush rights and freedoms, both here at home and overseas. We need to redefine what it means to be a proud American.

I hope this will strike a resounding chord within everyone on this website. Mr. Moore may have different views on Bush, Iraq, WMD's, the economy, and many other things, but in the end, he loves freedom, and the freedom to say whatever he feels he needs to say. That is the beauty of America.

Now lets be good little mindless liberals and go out and spray paint SUV's,
trick soldiers into answering questions and make sure that Communism is firmly ensconsed in the American mind!!!

What I think he is trying to say is that although Moore proclaims about freedom of speech and other liberties, those things should only apply to him and other super left liberals.

Why did he mention that he is hiring an army of lawyers to go after critics of his movie and those who find the truth through the lies in his mockumentary?

He is obviously a very biased person, who does not believe in complete freedom. He has cursed capitalism, cursed democracy, cursed our Constitution. I just don't see why others do not see it.

Why does he continue to say Bush didn't win the election. He continues to claim a majority of the people didn't vote for Bush, however we have had the Electoral College since the beginning and everyone knows the EC protects the minority from states like California (my state) from controlling who is in office.

He complains about the florida recount, but Bush won those over and over and he also won by a decent margin, he should have been worried about Wisconsin, his neighbor state, where Bush won by 366 votes. He claims the Supreme Court helped Bush out. All the Surpreme Court said was the ballots have been counted a couple of times now, and they do not need to be counted again.

So, Moore's comments on his website are to further his hypnotizing ways. And, obviously in your case, it has worked.

First of all, I never said I was liberal, or that I agreed with Moore. What I found in the letter was a message of freedom for EVERYONE. Whether they are Bush, Cheney, Moore, me, or you. We all (should) have the freedom to say what we feel we need to.

Did you read the letter? And why do you feel the need to attack me, when all I am doing is trying to point out that Michael Moore understands free speech, and is trying to support it?

The truth is the flag belongs to us all, its just not the politicians who have a right to it. I have had relatives die fighting for the rights we all hold so dear, republican or democrat we all have a right to say what we think, thats the American thing to do. But the truth is this plain and simple, the things we hold dear can be used against us just as surely as the things we hate. To label someone unpatriotic because they say something you don't like or believe to be true is one way this can be used against us all, the flag for me stands for the rights that others have died fighting for. Its stands for the right, the freedom to speak out no matter what the speaker is speaking about, they have the right to speak out period. If you don't like it don't listen but never think that because you don't like it, that person or the message, they should not be allowed to say it; that takes away everything that the flag stands for. Its like this, you may not like a certain book in your library so you have a book burning party, next week a group may come along and take out and burn the bible, the history books, etc., where does your rights begin and end? Each time you stand by and watch a right disappear for someone you don't like, don't be too surprised when that right disappears for you and your loved ones as well. Once their taken away for one it is so much easier for them to be taken from the second and third and us all. Who was it said, something like, I do not like or believe in what you ar saying but I will defend to the death your right to say it. Like Moore or not the powers that be has tried to shut this movie down, censorship is the closest thig to a communism I know of. If you don't like him don't go see his movie but no one has the right to censor his work, his freedom of speech or yours or mine. When that day comes we are all in big trouble.

I second that motion. I also think it's absurd that people decided to start attacking Moore for this statement. Okay, maybe you consider Moore to be makign a hypocritical statement. Needless mudslinging ensues. Let's discuss his message and ignore who said it for a moment, because the fact that Moore said it is irrelavent to the meaning of the statement itself. I think Goose pretty much sums up how I feel about this, and I agree with the statement overall. I, however, just plain don't like flagsl...
