Was not sure which forum to post this in, and this may only be for U.S. folks,if you are concerned with your privacy, check to see if your info is listed.

There's a site called Spokeo.com that's a new online USA phone book w/personal information: everything from pics you've posted on FB or web, your approx credit score, home value, income, age, etc. You can remove yourself by searching for yourself on their site, copying the URL of your page, then go to the bottom of the page and click on Privacy button to remove yourself. Copy & repost so your FB friends are aware.

I just tried. It had my old house and picture of it, the worth of the old house, my marital status was wrong, my actual location now unavailable, and the map location was way off by miles.

It also stated I still lived there for 4 years now, when in fact I havent lived there for 4 years at all.

Quite un-nerving anyway if they get it tweaked! Thanks!

It had all my old info, plus up to date info, just finished the removal process on all the listings. Crazy stuff.

It doesn't show much unless you pay. Scary, scary concept tho.

Seems like it would make life easy for someone who wanted to target you for crime or stalking.

Mine said "500 : Internal Error," and "Oops, there was an error on this page."
Guess it doesn't like my security and proxy.

It had some of my information wrong, like marital status, home value, time I've lived here, but enough correct to make me nervous. I only wonder what was available to someone willing to pay for the info until I removed it...

I first saw spokeo a few years ago. The info was a way off on mine but still scary. You know you can have your name deleted and the info about you. I think the menu at the bottom will allow you to do that. My info is no longer available.

Yea, you have to copy the URL once you are on your info, go to privacy, enter email address and confirm. I had never heard of this site before this morning (a post on one of my FB friends walls)...at any rate, they had old and updated info of mine, and that was the free version.

I did not find much about myself on this site. Just a couple of old addresses and it looks like you have to pay if you want to see more.
There's another website that shows just about every time and place your name has been mentioned on the web.
That's at pipl.com And it's free.

That is messed up!!!

It shows all of my addresses all the way back for me to 1997.

All of the info is spot on.

Scary stuff right there.....

It only finds me by username, not by real name. I cannot remove myself when on username search. You can only click privacy and remove yourself apparently in people search mode. Odd.

Important to know about info that just anyone can access...

...but everyone knows your personal info has been up for sale for a long, long time - right? And it gets sold, and traded back and forth between businesses and global corporations all the time, right? Medical insurance companies, banks, you name it.

Selling personal information is big business - always has been.

The REAL problem with these kinds of internet sites is that it cuts into the global corporations' profit margin.

PLEASE - don't get up in arms about this one - don't help TPTB pretend "personal privacy" exists. It's just a distraction from the real issues.

S&F tho.

Im only a minor so my info wasn't on there (but there is another Brian Jordan in my home town which I haven't been to since I was 2) But I did take off my parents stuff though. And even though you have to pay to get most of the info it is extremely cheap and affordible for most people.

lol.. It's funny. I went and found my whole family. Than I looked for Barrack Obama.

It says he lives at "1212 Rockefeller Center" Looking on a map though, that address doesn't exist.

I just couldn't help the irony of him living in the middle of "Rockefeller Center."

Oh my god!!!!

All of my information is right there for everyone to see, even my photos which are PRIVATE on the site I have them uploaded to...they can also see ALL of my videos I have done for my job and easily put 2 and 2 together to find out who my family and boyfriend is which could have dire consequences!

What the eff is this world coming to!!! How do I remove these things???

EDIT: Well I have the instructions here on removing myself from this one site but whats to stop them? I have my facebook completely private and still it is showing up? How can I get off the grid, is it even possible at this point? I would have to remove everything, but as many people have told me even if you delete things from the web, they are somehow still here....?? And also I can search myself on dirt-search.org and there are many other sites which have my personal info for all to see. Why isnt this illegal?

This is actually one of the few "find people" sites that comes close to providing real info about me. It even has two of my former real addresses, which is impressive as I have taken measures to confuse this particular issue with a few hundred fake addresses - whenever a web app asks me for one. None of the fakes showed up. The site doesn't have my present address, or the one directly previous. But it does have one that is within 6 years of being valid.

My second impression is that it seems to be undervaluing my previous houses by about $100,000.00 per house. It says that one of my former homes is valued at 45k when it was appraised at, and sold for 150k.

But, other than that, pretty interesting. I am half tempted to spend the 3 bucks for a membership just to see what else it has, on me, that is current, valid, and not created as a smoke screen.

It also searches usernames from social sites. I did a search with a couple of users from ATS and got some hits with real names. Not sure if they're correct, but never the less, another lesson from the web.....never use the same handle at different sites unless you don't mind it being traced back to you.
