Muzzy will ye STOP jumping off the roofs! People are going to think there are earthquakes.

Wait, there are! What are you folks doing in New Zealand? Did you upset someone - the God of the Underworld for example, or Neptune?

@westcoast: No not a precursor to a 9. I am sure of that. It would be the first time ever if it happened.

Didn't feel it this far down... and THAT fast asleep!!!

Good to see the tsunami warnings lifted.

Right.. it's about time the Alpine Fault didn't something now, don't ya think... she looks lovely this morning out the window...

With all that subduction activity on North Island it does makes you wonder whether, on a plate boundary level, it could affect the Alpine Fault - we've already seen some knock on quakes in the area between Hikurangi trench and Alpine in the Marlborough area.

5.3 Aftershock to Kermadecs just reported

Now that you mention the Alpine fault...

Should it release anytime soon, what could be the effect on the Canterbury/Christchurch region from an Alpine 8+ quake...wouldn't there be an almost guarantee of releasing further faults in the immediate region?

Considering that GeoNet predicts a 1 in 4 chance of a 6 to 7 in Canterbury, during the next 12 months, I would have thought it would be a BAD situation for us in Canterbury, if the Alpine fault releases in this time-frame.

Combined with 2-3 minutes of serious 'rolling', interspersed with other faults going off around Christchurch & Banks Penisula...GULP!

#Tsunami warning has been cancelled

0900, 7 July 2011
A tsunami was confirmed from the earthquake in the Kermadec Islands. Advice from GNS Science is that the tsunami does not represent a threat to New Zealand.

However, they expect that there will be unusually strong tidal surges and currents.

For the next 24 hours people should exercise caution and discretion before entering the water or going out in small boats in all parts of New Zealand.

Me.

Yeah, and I'm 60km closer to Alpine than Chch .. was bad enough in 7.1 with 40/50 secs of shaking so it will be like hell on earth when Alpine goes off - I think I read up to 4 mins of shaking.

But can't live in fear - we just assume our house will be flat, or at the least VERY munted, when Alpine goes.. we've always known it was there, it's always had the potential, so nothing's changed except our appreciation (for want of a better word!) of what being in a large quake is like..

Should it release anytime soon, what could be the effect on the Canterbury/Christchurch region from an Alpine 8+ quake...wouldn't there be an almost guarantee of releasing further faults in the immediate region?

It will affect the 100's of faults all over the South Island - including the major ones and probably the ones we don't even know about yet... Canterbury/Chch will be but a small part of huge destruction up and down the south island in areas close to the fault - including transport routes - as well as potential damage to the north island depending on where, and how, the fault ruptures and the size of the quake.
