Turkey downgraded to a 5.8 by both USGS and EMSC (They only had it at 5.9 anyway)

earthquake.usgs.gov...

@boo - your 4.9 was a 5.0 when it first came up.

Whole bunch of Turkey quakes not on USGS

What does the term GREEN earthquake alert mean?

Is this something new?

I think it is particular to that site. It does not really make sense to call it green unless all is well and I doubt all is well.

USGS call it Yellow

They call it mellow yellow
(Quite rightly)

The European Seismic Center site has been down for hours (Says "No results found"). I tried on my cell too, but nothing. Just when the night seemed to bring more aftershocks in Greece and Turkey...

It is kind of strange. Must be some kind of error somewhere.
Neither ERIS or USGS even list any insident in Libya.

The quake is on EMSC, but in the mainlist ID 7984 - not even highlighted.
It took place some 12 hours ago, at depth of 30Km it really must have shaken al of the med.

www.emsc-csem.org...

I also found it reported with map here:
www.infp.ro...

Maybe somebody kicked the recorder

You could be right zenius, I had a closer look at the Straits of Messina, and the layout is very similar to Cook Strait that seperates the North and South Island of NZ, especially the Convergant Boundry part.
I have changed the "quake balls" to depth rather than magnitude and graphed the depth compared to the map.

It is definitely a complicated section of the Med.
Mt Etna fits in perfectly if the African Plate is going over the European Plate, but thats not the current theory is it? It is supposed to be the other way around.

I tried to draw a line of the angle of the split between the plates, but couldn't figure out which way to angle it

BTW the Boundry Lines on the Map come from USGS Google Earth download KML files.

118 quakes in the last 7 days in Western Turkey, the bulk of which are in the last 2 days

Cumulative for last 7 days

Magnitudes for last 7 days

Bit windy in Iceland!!! Hekla seismo:

BTW: As I explained on the Libya fearmongering thread this is a computer glitch. Yes the EMSC report is genuine but if you look at it all the stations reporting - except the last one - are showing 0 magnitude which is either very small (about 2 Kilojoules) or is non-existent. Only the last one is reporting 8.4

It is pretty obvious from this that it is a glitch - as some one said "someone kicked the recorder" or maybe some ordinance disturbed it?

Anyway it is not real, it is not a misreported 6.0 or anything else. There was a quake in Italy just before the time of that and it may have been enough time for the signal to get there but it was a 4.7

Date/Time UTC,Latitude,Longitude,Magnitude,Depth(Km),Location
2011-05-19 14:50:53, 39.050, 15.180, 4.7, 292.0, Southern Italy

It is not worth putting any more time and effort into a non-event. Leave the fear-mongers to it.

Question for our clever people. Puterman/Muzzy etc.
Just read this article which I found interesting.
Is there a way for us to access data like this? From sat data etc.

He said gases such as radon, carbon dioxide and hydrogen escape from the earth's crust as the earth begins to move under the stress. The gases escape into the atmosphere and climb into the ionosphere. It's in these upper areas that the gases ionize and begin to create heat. And using satellite data and atmospheric monitors, researchers can see these changes as they happen.

Not as far as I am aware but I am looking. You should be looking at the Earth monitoring satellites, of which GOES may be your best bet but there is a small project which I can't think of the name of that may be doing this with it's mini-satellite.

I did come across this which is a several pages set of bibliography on precursors of major earthquakes. It is a PDF file and the titling is in French, but the bibliography is in English

Précurseurs de séismes majeurs

Nice work as always Muzzy. It's an interesting area of the planet, and there seems to be a lot of varying ideas about the plate tectonics of the area. It makes sense but I feel there is a little more to the puzzle yet (?)

Something i have been thinking about...the Mississippi Flood and the New Madrid Fault. All these Weight on top of this Fault is not good me thinks.

If its possible, could you make a Map with the Quakes that have happened there lately, the assumed Fault and the Flood? And if that Data is avaivable, the Type of Soil too (to see where it could cause Liquification)

Thanks.
