Repeal of Military Gay Ban Clears Final Senate Hurdle Before Passage

WASHINGTON -- After two failed attempts, Senate Democrats cleared the way Saturday for passage of a landmark bill that would end the Clinton-era ban on gays serving openly in the military and mark a major triumph for President Obama, liberals and the gay community.

In an unusual weekend session, senators voted 63-33 to advance a bill ending the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

The repeal, which passed the House this week, could win final passage by Saturday afternoon. The Senate plans to vote at 3 p.m.

Well there ya go. a major wedge issue is now resolved and the liberals have won.

now gay men and women can open up and die for misguided and corrupt policies just like straight men and women

this is a good move overall for equality in a nation that presents itself as a nation of equals no matter this, that, etc.

McCain did give a opposing speech...reminding the people one last time how much 10 years can change a man. Sadly, McCain's final legacy in the senate will be "that guy whom flip flopped and tried to keep people from being equal"..written in history books as "that one.." like the senators whom opposed freeing the slaves, or giving blacks equal rights, etc...

Anyhow...Congratulations America...finally we started being just a little less hypocritical..still a long way to go, but its good to know that we have not stagnated.

Maybe now the government can work on legal gay marriage...

my preference actually would be for the government to simply not acknowledge marriage as some sort of legal arrangement...give everyone civil unions seperate from weddings and let the churches figure out if they want to marry people.

marriage is a religious ceremony...not sure why the government is trying to regulate it to begin with.

As much as I should be pleased that the world is moving away from discrimination based on life choices that don't really harm anyone (although, haven't soldiers been doing each other since the dark ages? Or is that just sailors?), there are two issues that I have with this little gem...

1) Does anyone actually want to (and therefore campaign for the right to) die for their country these days? And anyone saying yes, is that really any different from suicide-bombers?

(Okay, so I recognise that joining the army is not equal to dying for your country, but i had to say something serious before the second point)

SECOND POINT INVALID AND QUITE OFFENSIVE NOW THAT I HAVE WORKED OUT WHAT THE HEADLINE MEANT.

No, they do this stuff. It's called neuro-linguistic programming, and it's just like all the news stations were calling the Wikileaks cable releases "dumps" (just like doo-doo). And just like they call guerrilla fighters in Iraq "insurgents," as if they're coming from somewhere besides Iraq. The MSM channels all do this and it's just one more form of brainwashing. Why is it the END of the United States?

The UK lifted its ban on lesbians and gays serving in the armed forces in 2000, and last time I looked we were all still here - no panic in the streets - no END of the UK.....

The reason opponents of lesbian and gay equality don't want gays serving in the military is because it demonstrates that the old limp-wristed and/or "only interested in sex" stereotypes are completely false, when heterosexual soldiers serve alongside, and witness the professionalism and bravery of their lesbian and gay colleagues - as happened in WW2.
