The Soviets aspired to explore space and were the first people in the world to develop and launch the first satellite into space (Sputnik). Then they launched comrade Gagarin into the cosmos, the first of mankind to step into a new age of existence.

And it's not like the Soviets were the pioneers and leaders in rocket technology and social philosophy or anything... I guess they were just a plague, like both NATO and the Nazis claim

Yes, I believe US is desperately trying to start a war there - trying to trigger massive conflict in the world, with NK now the ignition point. A major war - involving many countries - is the only thing they think will get them out of the mess they are in.

Wow i just read the thread and It was almost like reading the pre-game comments for an NFL game or any sporting event for that matter. Here is the thing, sure they accomplished that, but we accomplished it very soon after, surpassed them, and the whole time our people had much better standards of living. Look, you will never win trying to argue for communism. It doesn't work.

There are TONS of North Korean defectors. Unfortunately if you get caught planning or attempting to defect you go to a prison work camp for the rest of your life.

South Korea as a proxy state for the USA.

It's not about world domination. Most of those bases are there for a reason.
Countries ask the U.S. to put bases in their countries in a lot of instances because it makes them feel safer.
If someone were to attack, they would also be attacking the U.S. so it's a deterrent, the U.S. benefit in other ways, place to deploy, allies, information, etc.

It's China and Russia's choice not to put bases around the world. Not that they couldn't do it.
Them not having bases everywhere wouldn't make them weaker if someone was trying to attack them.
No world domination attempts. Sorry.

Really? Because I've spent most of my life studying the Soviet Union and my only regret is that I was born in the same year that it dissipated.

Soviets had no regard for human life, eh? It's not like the entire Leninist philosophy was based on regard for the value of all human life, as opposed to empires with class hierarchies where only the rich and powerful have double standards while everyone else are just drones to support their cause.

And yes, lets talk about regards for human life. Which social philosophy in practice has the moral high ground then; is it Islamic governments? The Soviets, and now Russians, have always been ahead of the West in whatever technology they needed. They aren't driven by money like the West, they are driven by ideology which is much more influential among the masses.

And standards of living are so much better in the US, eh? Ever been in the slums of a city? Ever been in a rural area neglected because of the money investment in global sprawls and corporations?

The only people with good living standards in the US are the middle-class and the rich. There's a huge disparity there, and if you think living standards are good there then maybe you should tour countries like Canada or Sweden where we don't have to pay $6000 if we get in a car accident and we can't afford health insurance, because the US government clearly has no regard for human life and safety unless they enforce a system that profits from it.
