Global backsliding in democracy after 2008
France, Italy, Greece and Slovenia dropped from the category of "full democracies" to "flawed democracies"
The results of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index 2010 show that there has been a worldwide decline in democracy since 2008. The Democracy Index highlights the impact of the global financial crisis on politics throughout most of the world, with the most significant changes happening within Europe.

This is actually a good thing.
Pure democracies are emotional mob lead societies that quickly turn into nanny welfare states. They are unsustainable forms of government.

Limited democracy is a good thing. There has to be a balance of power with checks.
Civilization wasn't exactly spread democratically. The Spanish, French, and British Empires were not democracies. The United States has a limited democracy. The best is a balance of estates and branches. A literal Golden Mean of Governing.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
