Democracy in Retreat

Global backsliding in democracy after 2008

France, Italy, Greece and Slovenia dropped from the category of "full democracies" to "flawed democracies"

The results of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index 2010 show that there has been a worldwide decline in democracy since 2008. The Democracy Index highlights the impact of the global financial crisis on politics throughout most of the world, with the most significant changes happening within Europe.

OK, so this probably isn't something that folks on this board aren't aware of, but it's interesting to see it reported by the MSM.

The US and UK are towards the bottom of the list which also probably won't surprise many on here.

The full report is available www.eiu.com... (signup required).

This is actually a good thing.

Pure democracies are emotional mob lead societies that quickly turn into nanny welfare states. They are unsustainable forms of government.

Contrary to what you think, democracy is exactly that bunch of emotional mob who helped transform the human society as a merged unit across many countries. In my opinion, democracy is in no way perfect, but its the best thing we have at this current point of human evolution.

I suspect we may see several people saying this is a good thing.

The "agents" are preparing people to believe democracy is evil.

Limited democracy is a good thing. There has to be a balance of power with checks.

Civilization wasn't exactly spread democratically. The Spanish, French, and British Empires were not democracies. The United States has a limited democracy. The best is a balance of estates and branches. A literal Golden Mean of Governing.

What my point is and as you have pointed out, a "limited democracy" does have its pro's and con's, it all depends on what country one lives in and what those citizen's consider as a democracy or as you have pointed out, a limited democracy.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

Any democracy is only as good as the information is has, Garbage In - Garbage Out.

Democracy has been falling since censorship, confidentiality, non disclosure and back door deals began.

Well those two you mentioned have been around way before democracy was conceived. Lets not forget, that its the people who are responsible and those who choose to spew trash and hope that the masses swallow it hook line and sinker. I guess when people believe that their vote does have some weight then we might possibly see an explosion of new interpretations of how and what a democracy should be.
