What melee weapons would you choose for when the SHTF?

well i certainly didn't want to come off sounding like a [BLANK]hole. I simply wanted to draw attention to how quickly the discussion begins to resemble kids LARPing in the woods and not real-world survival. Katanas and ninja stars are great for kung fu movies but A) where are you going to find them and B) these are precision weapons which require a great amount of skill and practice. I was thinking the gun would be your absolute last line of defense, but that your improvised melee weapons would be just as effective as someone who only has passing knowledge of their sword or spear. Not to question anyone's honesty, but i somehow doubt that the guys on here giving advice on blowtubes and ninja stars are ninja masters themselves. Just trying to contribute to a legit, real-world concern in these End Times, not put anybody down on a personal level. I will however, stand by my assertion that just because the world ends doesn't mean that older weaponry somehow gives you an advantage over guns and baseball bats and wrecking bars.

few people know that the swords on the market are for show only not for actual use even the 600$ ones are for wall decoration, few makers make the real deal, and cost over 1000$, let alone how to use it, takes years to master the at of sword fighting, it is not like your HL series, some of the moves are real, i will say that.

I have a short sword and a 2 headed axe. I also am a very good bow hunter.

A sword or similar katana won't cut it. (no pun intended) If they are far enough away to use a sword then you just shoot them with the SIG Sauer P229 357 SIG or my Doublestar AR15 carbine. however for up close and personal...

melee or brawl fighting is more than just hand to hand,think fast move fast, nothing worse than in the middle of of a mosh pit when one breaks out. lol black eye, broke nose and busted finger,the pinky i might add, not throwing a punch but blocking one.

Now when the SHTF a melee would be a bloody down and dirty fight to live, kill or be killed, (and one does not need to kill, just disarm.) brawl, not were after you sit down drink a few with the guy that tried to rip head of and laugh about it and mend wounds. So if you are serious about being the victor, and not the loser, learn Aikido.

I have tons of knifes, even some extra ammo.
I have even rigged a few things up but those are for later.

But no SHTF, wont happen, if it does. Team up, survival is through cooperation, not individual gain.

You live if you work together (so team up with your town) then towns team up, then you have cities, then an army. TADAA!!

Since I'd definitely take to the woods, if the SHTF, I would probably end up fashioning a homemade spear and/or bow and arrow a la Predator. Knives would also be indispensable items.

not all would be willing to do that, start with your neighbor hood then spread out, they tell there friends that tell there friends etc, even a church group. i am 45 and i see this happening by the time i reach 55, if not sooner. stock up on food ammo, first aid, water, fuel and wood. look in side your tool shed, garage or work shop what do you have? live in an apartment or condo, kitchen tools knifes, broom, closet rod, cords, twine, wire coat hangers, all can be used as tools /weapons to survive.

Agreed. However, what if the majority of the people in your town falsely accuse you of something, or they simply don't like you, or they like you but they like your WIFE or GIRLFRIEND *more* and would like her to be part of their harem? Or, what if your clan goes up against a rival clan that's decided they want YOUR CLAN'S well because theirs ran dry, or they want YOUR CLAN'S cornfield? You get the idea. Cooperation is great, but if it were the norm, then we wouldn't have all the conflict present in the world as it is --pre-SHTF.

Post SHTF world? Chaos. Isolated groups, militias and communities. Fights to the death over limited resources. Most likely YOU won't be wanting to steal from and kill *them.* More likely *they* will want to rob you and kill you and your people. Just the way it is. Why? Imperfect is mankind. Greedy is mankind.

The people who might best survive, I imagine, will have prepared a large, underground bunker/complex/home/estate stocked with enough food and water and entertainment to last at least five years, ten preferred. Maybe have a natural well and a way to enter a cavern system by emergency blasting (as a last resort escape route). The point is that these "lucky" people can wait a month, quietly peek out into the world after the SHTF and see if they want to come out. Stay for a year or more and let the most aggressive, bloodthirsty people take each other out. By then, I imagine we would either have cooperated to some degree or died. Somebody should be "in charge" of a community or series of communities by then.

After a year, you've really only used up food (if you have a well or natural spring). Your ammo is there, your guns are pristine... You are completely fresh to meet a brave, new world order. And, if "they" are in charge... simply go back to your hole and stay as long as you can. Maybe blast into that cavern system and try to make contact with the reptoids that were responsible for the Chilean mining incident a couple of months back. Or, expand outward into this new cavern system, creating more living quarters for the children you and your people may have. You could be the start of a new, underground civilization that rises from the caverns to fight off the New World Order (post SHTF) in an epic struggle for the restoration of 'Merica. With melee weapons should you run out of ammo.

i know how to use a sword. Ive done both live-steel fighting and SCA heavy combat.

I train capoeira, and we use machetes in our training.

I also know how to use my hands, feet, and brain.

My shaving kit has a straight razor in it, too.

#1-Boot Knife-------------Always practicle. Not to big good for stabbing
#2-Spinal Back-up------This is a Tanto knife strapped up side down in your back
#3-Machete----------------Hands down the No.1 choice for an apocaliptic scenario.
#4-My Buck Kalinga----For hand to hand, good for slicing and major up close and personal damage.
#5-Studded Mace--------Ouch!!!

Any sort of piercing weapon will do. Blade. Shard of glass. Toothbrush.

If all else fails, I'll just use my fingers to rip throats out.

I was never into playing "army" as a kid, or now playing army video games. There's an idea, how about one of you come up with a post nuclear war game where you get to choose some of the weapons your talking about. Then you all can live your fantasy playing the game.
