This brings to mind one of my favorite poems:

"It was six men of Indostan, to learning much inclined,
who went to see the elephant (Though all of them were blind),
that each by observation, might satisfy his mind.

The first approached the elephant, and, happening to fall,
against his broad and sturdy side, at once began to bawl:
"God bless me! but the elephant, is nothing but a wall!"

The second feeling of the tusk, cried: "Ho! what have we here,
so very round and smooth and sharp? To me tis mighty clear,
this wonder of an elephant, is very like a spear!"

The third approached the animal, and, happening to take,
the squirming trunk within his hands, "I see," quoth he,
the elephant is very like a snake!"

The fourth reached out his eager hand, and felt about the knee:
"What most this wondrous beast is like, is mighty plain," quoth he;
"Tis clear enough the elephant is very like a tree."

The fifth, who chanced to touch the ear, Said; "E'en the blindest man
can tell what this resembles most; Deny the fact who can,
This marvel of an elephant, is very like a fan!"

The sixth no sooner had begun, about the beast to grope,
than, seizing on the swinging tail, that fell within his scope,
"I see," quothe he, "the elephant is very like a rope!"

And so these men of Indostan, disputed loud and long,
each in his own opinion, exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right, and all were in the wrong!

So, oft in theologic wars, the disputants, I ween,
tread on in utter ignorance, of what each other mean,
and prate about the elephant, not one of them has seen!"
— John Godfrey Saxe

The poem still applies, even though this is a philosophical discussion.
The point I suppose, is that we are all essentially blind, because our senses are limited.
How would our philosophy change were we able to see into the ultraviolet spectrum? Would we still perceive reality in the same way? How has our reality changed with advancements in technology?
I don't think that purpose exists outside of our very limited minds. We are who we believe we are.
We create our own purpose. An external plan is not required. We give our lives purpose by living, and all the experiences that life brings.

I could be wrong. But if there were a plan or purpose, wouldn't I know it? Why the guessing game?
Is it a game? Are we supposed to guess? I hardly think that is fair.
Anyway…my two cents.

Meaning of life? Just do it,live it & try to enjoy it i suppose. When all is said & done....there really is no "meaning" to something you just all of a sudden become introduced to,is there?I mean can anyone here truly remember waiting in line in maybe another dimension "pre life" & a doorman pointing to you & stating to get ready its your turn you are about to be born,to begin a life?Of having second thoughts & saying im not ready,i'll sit this round out let the guy behind me go next.No.Its about as inane as schoolboys ostracizing the boy who was born in another country but brought here by emigrating parents. He had no say in it,he is just here.

Love is always needed to be placed in life, but it should not be used to distort the truth of the world.

The meaning of life, is to live

Hello Jordan River, may Peace be with you! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and understandings. I fully agree with the three sentences I quoted from you.

That view is arrogant.

Does the lion believe it better than the zebra because it hunts them? the level of intelligence does not come into it all, you are an animal as well...or do people forget we are part of the group mammalia.

I have noticed that many women of my species possess bodacious, mammalian, protruberancies, but that doesn't mean that we're just animals and do not possess higher faculties of awareness and possibility, unless of course I were to ask one for a date and she said yes, then it's back to animal again..

not everything has to be explained or understood. So instead of wasting your life thinking about life and not living it, you will miss out on life therefore it would have meant nothing!

I must be a moron then, because I say the meaning of life is to love, since love swallows death in everlasting life, and is therefore a first/last cause.

Exactly !!! Hypothetically,If it were a prerequisite to dying or passing on, persons were asked & answered honestly what their utmost disappointment was from this existence, I would imagine a huge amount would state they were too preoccupied with worrying about this or analyzing that or trying to conform to someone else s expectations & quite simply forgot TO JUST LIVE LIFE.

But life passes away and it and we, all crumble to dust, it doesn't take long..

to just live life while you can and get to where you can while you can, isn't the highest meaning or purpose imho.

if there's a meaning to life, other than love, it is, imo, to discover the meaning of life, where the will to meaning, along with the will and desire to love and to be loved, is greater than just the will to live life.

simply trying to live life, even to the very best of our ability, often comes to naught.

in the end it will be how much love we contain I do believe, not the size of our photo album or our memories. Loving relationships are everything.

Too bad there's so little of that to go around..

We all seem to provide our own meaning to life. There are many different perspectives and approaches to this question, and a lot of it depends on our individual degree of consciousness. We're all in different places as far as our experience goes, and this rings true for our individual Spirituality, our abilities to percieve, and the aforementioned degree of consciousness. Some of us require more complex meaning, some less. Put all the various perspectives together and you have the whole. I see this as a Big PIcture/Little Picture kind of thing, and all perspectives are equal as being part of the whole. It's as simple or as complex as you want to make it, but in many was It's like Maslow's Pyramid.

There is no meaning to life.

Humans are the only creatures on this earth who elevate themselves into believing they have a purpose to living, our life is no different than that of the common garden ant.

We are born, we grow, we learn, we propagate, we die

That is your, my, our purpose to further species.

Don't believe for a second that a higher level of intelligence gives anyone the right to think otherwise, it was evolution which got us here, a lucky chain of events, not the search for the meaning to life.

I disagree with everything you said because if all that you say were true, then whats the point? no there must be more the only thing you said that makes sense is evolution got us here. but my friend evolution is a never ending on going process what we should ask is where will evolution take us? and our lives are so different than that of a common ant. they actually work together to overcome there obstacles we have not yet masterd that

If that were true then I would be a moron here... So let me give you what you seem to consider a morons view of the meaning of life. First the meaning of life is not to live. To live is just the means of life not the meaning. What do we live for if we are just to live? The meaning of life is to experience, to love, to laugh, to enjoy, to be happy, to mourn, to learn to become better human beings, to progress and evolve to higher beings, to become that which we decide to become. This is the meaning of life, that is the journey, that is who we are, that is our purpose. There are great horizons and visions for us yet to engage and master, this life is only but a small moment in eternity part of a long and exciting journey. Everything we see in this world of form is headed somewhere whether we know it or not, from the mineral kingdom to the plant kingdom, from to the animal kingdom to the human kingdom, to the God kingdom and beyond.

Calm yourself and seek within through contemplation, meditation, prayer, and sustained focus and expand your horizons for the vision of all things is available to all who seek it and persist till they find it.

Hmm, yes. That groks. Great morons must think alike..

And I don't mind even being called a fool for holding this POV or even rejected, if need be, provided my ideas and intentions aren't discarded. All we're asking for is due consideration with an open mind, it that too much to ask?

You never know, see, when someone among us might ring the bell, and you can't unring a rung bell, and the bell it always tolls for thee..

Except there's no church to go to, neccessarily (neither in the temple nor on the mountain), since we can all go within, because "God" (whatever that may be or mean) always seeks worshippers who worship in spirit, and in truth.

It's so simple. It's a no brainer. Any moron ought to be able to figure these things out, by taking another look if needed with an open and inquiring mind.

It's all available.. but it might take either a moron or a genius (doesn't matter which) to begin to figure it out, and as a result, start to unravel the puzzle for our mutual grokking.

Here's one I've found really curious.
My mom died in Spring 2004.
A few nights after she died I dreamed she came back and was talking to me. Actually she had known she was dying, and made me a promise she'd come back and tell me whatever she found out in death.

Ok, so I'm dreaming quite lucidly and mom is there, and I ask her "mom, what's the meaning of life?"

We were driving in this old covertible down my town's broad street and it looked like 1950, before I was even born.

She laughed and said "The purpose of life? Just get all the gold you can get. That's all you got to worry about."

lol, What's so funny is that I did.

The treasure is where the heart is, the kind which can never be taken. This is what I know. An attempt WILL be made to steal your gold at some point down the line, in one way, or another, but if it's stored up in the incorruptible place, which also resides within, then there is an internal vault, which "Satan" cannot access..!

This is very good news for the human being.

Everything else, every other kind of gold is perishable in the end. Not that money cannot be used to serve God, but it rarely ever is.

"Therefore, store up your treasure in heaven (first/last cause, point of incorruptibility) where neither thief nor woodworm can destroy."

Surely that is also a type of Eastern mystical statement at the same time, implying the notion of reincarnation and/or of reward ie: a meaning and purpose to life, which is formative, fruitful, and which is absolutely imperishable ie: gift of eternal life and the first fruits of our increase (self reinforcing dynamic of love meeting love and life meeting everlasting life).

Conscious awareness then is the lamp unto our path, and a light to our feet as we walk into the divine dark or the unknown unknown ie: through the valley of the shadow of death (this life).
