Good grieve dude.

Read the thread title. It's what the book is all about.although there is pretty much agreement among the single celled organisms.

Okay, so we find ourselves in a book critique discussion about a book, in my opinion, that achieved in 800 pages what a grade B horror movie director accomplished in fifty pages of a double spaced script called something like 'Attack of the Fifty Foot Octopi."

I still don't get what connection you are making between the book and this theoretical discussion. I can't read your mind. Or, I can. But I just don't want to. It would be more productive if you made a statement, based on your opinions, how you see something in the book I don't see as connected to this theoretical discussion.

I have this suspicion that we are just "busses" designed by some intelligent nano-organism.

It would explain intelligent design with glaring macrodefects like 'nose-hair', etc.

If the Creator was quite small and nearsighted (Mr. Crabs yells PLANKTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)...

Yes, they say that if Plankton disappeared from our oceans, everything else on the planet would disappear. Could be that plankton is a higher intelligence order than we understand. That Plankton does communicate and plan with each other. They form Plankton words. Like maybe cells and bacteria form their own language with which they communicate and plan between themselves. Humans are a larger system full of perceptions that are oftten overlooking the smaller truths.

Single cells, bacterias and plants are not sentient, and they are not beings (in traditional definition). What we call sentience and "being" is the product of our nervous system. If a life does not have NS (or analogous, comparably complex system), it cannot be sentient, and does not qualify as being.

You could argue that computers are not sentient in the traditional sense.....and then there's the arguments presented by Ray Kurzweil: yesterday's tradition is today's surprise.
