ok well , long story short , i was driving to go pick up some pizza today and when i got out of the car i noticed people staring at the sky ,and so like everyone els i turned my head towards the the sky and a friend of mine snapped the pic .. this picture was taken from my friends cell phone at about 2:50 or 3:00 pm PST ,i was facing west , i dont know whats going on in the pic , i have never seen anything like this ,i was just hoping to get some answers ..is this natural? ..could something have exploded in the
sky ? the bright spot in the pic is not the sun it seems to be a reflection of the sun .. anyway .. any thoughts on this would be nice ..but i am sure its nothing to serious ..i hope not anyway lol

pics a little big ,lets see if i can fix it

On the surface of it, it looks like an irridescent cloud. Not an extremely rare condition, but very beautiful.

That's my guess anyway. Nice photo!

Lucky you I would love to see something like that in real life.

As far as I know it's called a fire rainbow, will try to find a link for you

Was this in Sacramento?

I havn't seen that cloud formation before, but the reflection looks exactly like what I
saw over downtown LA about a month ago, just a few days after the sky was blanketed
with chemtrails.

Whatever they spray in the air reflects the sunlight like that.

I hope that helps

Cool pic by the way

very good thought but the only reason i dont think its that by comparison is it seems like what u thought was that cloud... seems to be almost like it was left there by what ever made the pretty much perfect hole in the rest of the clouds..

you could be right cuz it does look similar but the whole in the clouds above it seem to make it much more... but i have seen photos of these before and also have heard people state that there was a bang or big light that created said hole in the clouds. definitely a cool pic tho. nice catch... but with that many people looking at it at one time id say you showed up late to something that coulda been pretty neat to share on this board

It could be from a small ice meteor/ite, looks like it got quite a ways through the atmosphere.

It's a "Punch Hole" cloud formation, with a large area of condensation in the centre, which could either come from a localised low-pressure zone, or from something causing a shock wave.
The guy talking about "explosions" leads be to think that the phenomenon arose from a point and spread outwards, not from the edges inwards, so... maybe it was a meteor exploding?

(To me it looks more like an "Implosion")

the puffy clouds are very high level in the atmosphere, so whatever happened took place far up. It could have been a little meteor or something that hit the atmosphere and exploded, displacing the moisture from the clouds and causing it to form differently into that central bit that is showing a rainbow pattern... thats my two cents anyway. nice pic!

I was at Sac State when I saw it.
It looked amazing, and to me, the most remarkable part was the fact that the strange cloud was floating in the middle of a larger cloud.
Perfectly, right in the middle.

As far as I can see now this type of cloud is called a Hole Punch cloud.
It seems from this link that they are pretty damn rare.
Looks like you have a pretty special picture there!
