In my threads on the Beasts, I used the analogy of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, which I find very illuminating.
Chapter 13 places great importance on the use of the tongue- "a mouth uttering haughty words" and "spoke like a dragon"- which is of, course, exactly
what brought Hitler to power.
The beast from the land exercises the authority of the beast from the land- of course Hitler, as leader of the state, exercised the authority which
belonged to the state.
This "exercising authority" business; if you take them as two different states or political powers, it isn't easy to explain. But if you take them as
the state and the leader of the state, then it's only common sense. Obviously some person has to exercise the authority of the state, because the
state itself cannot do it personally.
The beast from the land gets the world to worship the beast from the sea- and for practical purposes, Hitler was getting his people to worship the
state or the German Volk. Since he was addressing the German Volk, he was effectively getting them to worship themselves, which is the most condensed
form of idolatry there is.
And the fact that they are worshipping a human institution and its human leader is the point of 666, a worship centred around humanity instead of
God.
The difference is that this leader would have most of the world as his audience instead of one nation.
It works in so many different ways.
