South Korea Rejects China Call for Talks as Naval Drills Begin

www.businessweek.com

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- South Korea rejected China’s call to resume six-party talks with North Korea today, as it’s navy began maneuvers with U.S. warships amid threats of a “merciless” response by Kim Jong Il’s regime.

The time isn’t right for such a meeting South Korean President Lee Myung Bak told visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo today in Seoul, Yonhap News said.

Looks like South Korea is not taking this situation laying down. Because the US and SK are continuing with the military drills, China will be able to say that SK provoked the North if the North attacks in response. By proposing the six-party talks, China will paint itself as the failed peacemaker.

With four more people dead, in addition to the 46 that died recently on that SK ship hit by the torpedo, SK's politician's can't afford to look any weaker.

It feels as though this is all leading to some kind of perfect storm, requiring only one person to light the powder keg of a new war.

Ha. "Fallout 3 world" would be a walk in the park.

Try something realistic, like.... I hope and pray a "The Road" world doesn't happen.

24/7 ash cloud over your head creating a nuclear winter, vegetation dying, cannibalism... Bad news bears!

Who was it that said "don't concern yourself with Iran, North Korea is next?" Looks like they knew the score.

I will try and find the proper quote.

I don't think this marks any serious move in any direction.

It seems reasonable that SK would no longer entertain NK. Rightly so IMO.

They have had plenty of time to resume talks and NK never holds. It's just more delaying and more opportunity for NK to build up their nuclear weaponry while getting aid too.

Most South Koreans would not accept their government going back to the table, not now. They might in the future, but there is no chance of that government defying public opinion even more than they already have in their weak response to NK aggression.

This is just more of China being the responsible neighbor.

China can't afford to loose international ties, and they don't want to loose their relationship with NK either. They are making all the right noises.

NK is being extremely irresponsible.
SK is being understandably defensive in the face of it.
America is meeting its obligations as an ally of SK.
China is being the diplomatic neighbor.

And that's how this will continue to unfold IMO. They all have their clearly defined roles, and the only unpredictable piece of this puzzle is NK.

And so it begins... Cant say that I am surprised. As for China calling for talks AFTER NK has fired on SK ...Im sure Im not the only one doing some eye rolling. I wonder what side Russia is going to take.

Alot here are making alot of assumptions, about who fired on who and who is right.

Just because south is usa friend, does not mean they are telling the truth.

The south has to goto the un and prove what they say, and anglo american influence over any decision has to be kept low key, as after iraq thing, no one will believe any anglo american investigation.

That I would disagree with, as there is much that is not said, or stated. First, the report would have to come from a combined group, of the following people: Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, as those countries were named specifically by KOREAN WAR ARMISTICE AGREEMENT. The South Korean side would have to produce evidence to the Sweden and Switzerland group, and China/North Korea would have to produce evidence to the Poland/Czechoslovakia group. It would be on those 4 nations opinion, on who broke the armistice agreement. It would then be up to the UN security council to determine if at all to take actions, though China would probably veto any and all actions that they suggest. So the lawyers will come up with a way to justify not having to go through the UN, if they are really desiring to restart a conflict again. North Korea is not wanting to back down, believing the show of strength will give them better leverage at the negotiation table, and unfortunately South Korea is not willing to back down this time, as they have been directly attacked by the north. Right now war or peace all lay in the hands of the negotiators to try to work this out, and to determine what if any actions are to be done. If they can not work it out, then it very well may mean war, however, China may use its financial leverage against the US to try to pull the US back from any action.

The one thing that bugs me about the "who fired first" argument is that all evidence, independent or quoting state, say that NK fired first.
China would jump on the opportunity to claim SK fired first, and they haven't.

Even NK has not, as far as I am aware, even claimed that SK fired at NK first. They stated that SK fired, which they've admitted they did, to the EAST of the island.
How is this any worse than NK firing medium range missiles toward Japan?

No one fired back then.

If anyone deserves a rocket up their ass for firing weaponry irresponsibly it's absolutely NK.

You're right. The attack on the SK ship was never explained properly or even proven, the US media came up with some lame "North Korea has human torpedoes so it must have been a suicide attack!". And this island shelling was provoked by SK actions. Gee, how convenient for an American carrier group to join SK forces for a "wargame" right after.

The US is pushing for a war in Korea. The military industrial complex is the US's primary industry now and they need wars to maintain their economy. The economically-draining aspect of war that affects the US is providing "security" after initial combat operations, but a place like North Korea can engage in war for a very long time and probably come out on top... so a war between NK and USSK would be most profitable for the US (while creating problems for other top economies like Russia, China and Japan).

Since Russia knows the Chousen torpedo is a German and not NK manufactured item
and knows everyone knew all along except the MSN types in the WEST
I'm sure as they indicated by abandoning the USD for bilateral trade with China the other day,
what they think

PS: they also read Bryznski's book about how he created the Taliban to lure the Russians into Afghanistan, and they also know that the CIA is selling all that Heroin - they asked the US to stop selling it IN Russia and the US said no.

they also know about all the western meddling in the 'Stans on Russia's border too..the 'color revolutions" etc

ALL THE EVIDENCE SAYS NOT:

Technically speaking they dont. There is already a UN resolution in effect on the penninsula that formed the truce stopping but not ending the war. Since there was no end to the war, so the 2 remain at war. The shelling of the island was a violation of the truce so any actions by the south would be justified.

The South Koreans want blood over the sinking of the ship, and now the 4 deaths. The US is trying to support and at the same time calm the south down. The fact the south is not entertaining the Chinese proposal, imo, is the clue that this is not going to end peacefully.
