I love diving, just haven't had much time lately, but dolphin's are the coolest and most curious creatures in the sea.

I want to go diving now.

P.S. They really like music too, play certain classical pieces underwater and they will come from miles away.

I love how the Scientist says we used to think animals didnt think, WTF are you insane.
my dogs look in the mirror all the time, I am sure they are self aware just because an animal doesn't get interested in its reflection does not mean it cannot think or have the realization of self, shoot if anything they are unimpressed and just dont care.

Dolphins are playful loving soulful animals much like us more so than apes I feel, though I have been around more dolphins than apes.

did you know that dolphins are said to be the only animal other than humans who have sex for pleasure not just to procreate. LOL another insane statement from a scientist but who knows.

“Man has always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much...the wheel, New York, wars and so on...while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man...for precisely the same reason.” - Douglas Adams

I have to agree that the ego of the scientist is a bit sickening, but they are giving credit where it is due now and if it opens eyes, then it is positive though long time in coming, 'eh?

I've always been a big believer in Elephant and Dolphin intelligence. In many ways I wonder if we shouldn't be learning to communicate and form an alliance with these 'smart' animals. We're not quite the top anymore, I figure all we have in our favor is a Thumb, and near psychotic curiosity about the world around us. (lest not mention the narcissistic and power hungry species we are).

But we are improving!

Dolphins also write epic poetry. They have bigger brains than humans proportionally to their bodies. They have the same mate for life usually. I've always considered dolphins to be persons.

This is an outstanding movie about the outrageous killings of dolphins going on over in Japan... it is heartbreaking to watch, but vital to understanding what is really going on...

Maybe you have already seen it. I tell everyone about this, the people I know who care about such things, and about mercury poisoning, too...

It is available on Netflix Instant Streaming.

imagen if you altered thier dna to have hands and to be able to other thier envoirment, imagen what they could do, if they are more intellgent then us (and i would imagen they are) then they could be smarter in math and science given the chance.

It is amazing to ponder at all the possiblities nature can provide, but maybe the dolphins came to a logical conclusion "simply enjoy life"

Well done for bringing that up!

It's a truly disturbing film....... I don't really know what to say other then that as it's a subject I feel completely powerless over

Edit to add
I have worked for charities that helped the Sea Turtle population in the past and the movie you posted really does make me feel truly sad

Hehehe Great Pic! Now we know why your kitties eyes are always going back and forth!

As for the thread! S&F! THANK YOU LADY S for another great thread!

Dolphins must really have a lot of patience to put up with us huh?

I've always thought of them as man's babysitter when I see dolphins working with trainers. Like the dolphins going 'Oh look, the little human wants us to catch the ball again, well isn't that just so cute!'

hehehe

Thanks you two!
peace

I've always loved dolphins and since a child, have always thought they were as smart as us. They're basically humans that swim. If they could speak English, boy would the world be an awesome place.

Star and flagged, love the thread and thanks for the awesome video.

Very interesting post! I have often wondered about this, and I remember seeing an article a couple of years ago that led me to believe that dolphins may be even more like us in ways that are not so pleasant...Dahmer the dolphin

I know...
the film is heartbreaking...
the one thing to do is to promote and let people know about these killings...

And the travesty of International protections for dolphins.
Every time one sets foot in a "Sea World" they support this kind of thing.

Thanks~

The very last couple of lines from this story were very disturbing. The reporter asked...so if dolphins are so intelligent what does this mean..Then the researcher replied...Oh that means they need more of our respect and protection.

What? all life on earth is valuable and none more so because it can recognize itself in a mirror. Trees, penicillin, squirrels, mushrooms all valuable lifeforms...the researchers comment sounded like biological eugenics...creepy.
