You must not listen to many mixtapes, or know why they exist....
Mix tapes are a great way to circulate copyrighted material such as songs recorded over instrumentals or copyrighted samples of other popular
music.... This is how we in the hiphop community, cn be free to express ourselves in much the same way Warhol did....
However, it is still illegal to sell or make a profit, from the standpoint of the artist, so they are often promotional material for actual "cleared"
albums....
This however leads me to think that though an artist can make and distribute these mix tapes, and friends can share them , people who own the rights
still have the ability to shut down electronic sites which share them digitally.
Though something else strikes me.... Look up the franchise boys.... They used to run mix tapes too and were busted, because well their network was so
big it became used for moving drugs
