I too have a sticker covering my webcam. My laptop does not have a built in Microphone. I found that out because when I spoke to someone over webcam, they could not hear my voice

Sorry, but, lol, if you already webcam and if you're already a member of FaceBook, and if you already surf areas on the net that are questionable, why would you care what people see on your webcam?

What, they might find you picking your nose or scratchign your nethers?

I mean, come one, if you're already so sucked into the social networking scene that you're on FaceBook I'd think you'd have an App installed already that tells everyone what youre' doing every second of every moment of every day and night. Or should I say 24/7 to be FB correct, lol.

As for being able to 'cyber-peep' people without their knowing? Sure it can be done. It is being done.
But obviously this shouldn't bother you - as a memeber of facebook you've already given up all rights to annonimity, so, what's the big diff.

Is it a concern for others who have a web cam to see their Grandkids, and maybe people who's 'other half' are over seas or in a motel rom on business. Sure, I can see the problem there, but - if you have to resort to a computer to keep your relationship intact? Oh well oh hell...

peace

My suggestion's turn your camera off. If it turns on for some odd reason, just turn it back off. It would be more of an annoyance than anything. Plus, I highly doubt the government could make much use of an image of you staring at a screen. It would be like them watching chatroulette or something. Your biggest worry should be them monitoring your keystrokes and personal info.

On my facebook, I put out neither my name nor photos. I don't even post any personal stuff on there.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned here, but I cpoied this from another thread from last year, and found it disturbingly interesting.......

Quote:

We could soon see a new kind of display screen from computer maker Apple - one that simultaneously takes pictures while showing images.

The clever idea is to insert thousands of microscopic image sensors in-between the liquid crystal display cells in the screen. Each sensor captures its own small image, but software stitches these together to create a single, larger picture.

A large LCD screen filled with image sensors would be ideal for videoconferencing, Apple suggests, as participants would always appear to look straight into the "camera". The technique could also add a camera function to a cellphone or PDA without wasting space, and light from the screen should help illuminate a subject.

The more sensors there are, the wider and clearer the image. Sketches accompanying the company's patent show as many sensors as liquid crystal cells in a screen. If some of the sensors have different focal lengths, switching between them would make the screen behave like a zoom lens.

I have always had my suspicions regarding these nifty little gadgets we keep being presented with, but everyone I know keeps telling me I'm just paranoid and thinking negatively.
I suppose that's true, but if I saw someone running towards me wit a baseball bat and an angry expression, my 'negative thinking and paranoia' could well save my life.

I you can remotely control the computer then you can 100% control the webcam.

This paragraph made me smile.

I never usually had much suspicion about the gadgets these days apart from the fact that they companies are trying to make more money out of them. I do not live in the country where those televisions are but its strange that people are spending money on technology instead of helping the poor.

Very odd this. I used the link you gave but nothing happened.

Do you think it might be because my web cam is lying on the self along with the microphone?

Recently I was sitting with my brother over coffee while I was dicecting a virus I had foound on my start up file.
Now I'm not all that exp on the computer so please forgive me , but this thing was a tiny file based on a 12 part play list. It sent my opening page elsewhere, it turned on the microphone on my computer, another piece turned up the volume???.ect,,,
We then started to try and find where this information was being sent , then poof! the file was gone.
Maybe there is some kind of key word scan set up on a pile of audio files collected, the same as the one on the phone systems.

I like the sticker on the camera idea!

Ever since ive had a laptop with a built in cam i have always stuck a sticker over the cam lol.
Im under no illusion that its very easy to access someones webcam....when i was younger i used to mess about a bit with hacking....nothing major just pissing about as you do when your bored and young lol

If i can do it....then im sure many other people can

Theres even codes that you can input to google to gain access to peoples private cams...security cams etc

I find it a bit ironic that if it wasn't for the poor, most of these gadgets wouldn't be available to us anyway.
I have never knowingly seen one of these televisions myself either, but I have always had suspicions about everything, though I try to accept most of it as inevitable and get on with my life as much as possible.
Who knows......, maybe we'll be having nano RFIDs woven into the very fibres of the clothes we wear before long, if we haven't already.

Well anti logger windows program, has a selling point of being able to stop someone using your webcam.

That is a anti logger program, so they must know what people are capable of using webcams for.

I've wondered this myself; fortunately for me, I don't own a webcam

I do know that there is a certain thing you can type into google that lets you connect to security cameras around the world so that you can watch live feeds and even control the cameras. As far as I know this is 100% legal and anyone can do it with a quick "google security camera hack". There are even websites that list available cameras to watch. I've seen ones inside of houses already, live, with people.

If that were true, I should be a famous porn star by now.
Only reason anyone would want to watch me would be to blackmail me.
If your already suspect or wanted by a government I'm sure they would do this.
But for the average persons computer habits, who would watch to try and find incriminating evidence?
The ridiculous hours of nonsense spent!

Yeah it happened..

Those kids in philly got spied on by their schools.

Filed a lawsuit, and the kid won like 60k, his lawyer got like 400k.

I dont know why thats fair, but they do it

It is possible to deactivate the light yes; it is as simple as ( variable=0 ) zero being off

Actually, if the LED on the camera is set on by default then the variable=0 will be default for on and variable=1 will be default for off.

For everyone that ever visited chatroullet ...... download a packet sniffer ... turn it on .... and check for packets of information sent to chatroullete ..... then turn off chat roullete ..... and check again and you will probably see that its still sending info ...

Sorry teenage hackers using programs that make Trojans is not what we are talking about. This is simply coding that any professional or amateur could do should they wish!

This is easy enough to prove or disprove. You claim that you know code that can activate someone's web cam just by visiting a web page. Create a web page and have another member visit that page. You describe the room or something the cam is pointed at and you win. You were right. But if the cam fails to work...
Every ISP offers free web sites for members. You made the claim, now prove it.

You will then get TCP packets closing the "handshake" with FIN/ACK packets from the data on the actual web page - HTTP on port 80.
