I always thought that the liquid got trapped on the little rough bits on the tongue, this research leads me to another question, if it's not for drinking then why are their tongues like sandpaper?

My cat tends to overcome the whole gravity problem by yelling at me until I turn on the tap slightly, he then stands under it and lets the water drip into his mouth.
Theres a fine line though, I have to turn it on enough to let him drink but not enough to make his paws wet.... Fussy damn cat

I think their tongue is like sandpaper for cleaning themselves. Cats are naturally clean they rarely need water to clean themselves unless they get really dirty.
