Scientists reveal secret of a cat

cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com

Alan Boyle writes:Engineers have used high-speed videos and mechanical gizmos to figure out the mechanics of a cat's drinking style, confirming what most pet owners know already: Cats are way different from dogs.

Dogs drink by dipping their tongues into liquids like ladles. A little pool of water is brought into the mouth every time Fido takes a gulp from the toilet bowl. Cats, in contrast, touch only the curled-back tip of the tongue onto the surface of the liquid. When the tongue is drawn back up into the cat's mouth, a thin column of the liquid is drawn up as well. Then the cat closes

Stocker admitted that there's not an immediate practical application to the research, which was conducted with borrowed equipment and no outside funding.

That scientist is a chump IMHO, he could have applied for a government grant and been paid millions to do that study. Instead, all those government bucks went to studying something stupid like cow farts.

Thanks, Reaper for sharing this information. I found it to be quite interesting.
I have a cat, and like the article said, I too thought that this was known by
everyone. Goes to show that there is no need to look any further than ones
own back yard for something unknown.

Another thing I've noticed about my critters is that the dog will look into the water bowl to see the level, lower his nose to it, then drink without dipping his face in.

The cats, on the other hand, don't seem to be able to see the water level, and will stick a foot in first to see where it is. The cat water is always full of dirt and grass seeds from their feet, even though the bowl's inside.

Great article. I've lived dogs most of my life and the method of dogs drinking came to as surprise to me when I saw it in slow motion for the first time. I thought they make a bowl of their tongue but it is exactly the reverse. The bowl is towards their own body instead of forward like you might think. If possible check out the episode Time Warp where they show it. It's brilliant. I already decided that when I win lottery I will start my own slow mo studio

Cats are strange with water, they all have their own unique need. One of my cats now will only drink from a human cup/glass of water filled to the top lol, and will not drink from a bowl.

Nice videos!

One thing I do know is that cats don't always land on their feet, I've seen some funny landings lol.

I was wondering. If cats have trouble seeing water would that explain why they hate it? Afaik there is only one breed of cat that is known for liking water.

Super Cool. Cats are awesome. I trained mine to come up and give me a kiss on the mouth. She is no longer with me
She had a long battle with diabetes and I had her put down about a year ago. I think about her all the time. Her fav toy was a twisty tie (the type you find on a packaged loaf of bread). I would twist it into a loop and throw it at her and she would either catch it or hit it back at me. Cats are so much fun.
