well, for all, strong supporters of jet version, some questions:
1. luminous intensity from source of light?
2. jet part to reflect Sun light?
3. how much squares in reflecting area?
4. distance to jet?
----------------------

The only one I can answer is 1, the source of the light I think is probably the sun. You can look up the luminous intensity, it's pretty bright.

Also if we knew the answer to #4 it would be helpful but we can only guess. The news crew's guess isn't too accurate I suspect, since they misidentified a contrail that was hundreds of miles away at the horizon as a smoke trail that was only 35 miles away.

I'll go with plane but I don't see much sign of darkening at the top as you suggest..
Looks pretty well lit up all the way to me.

Check out this video, the darkening is more apparent.

Ok everyone. First post. Had to add my two cents. Maybe they are waving this stuff right under our nose. Check out this link on CNN today to TIME Magazine about the 50 greatest inventions of 2010.

Could this be what they were firing in Cali and the other recent missle sightings? A show of force? Testing? Opinions?

Maybe knowing what is that flying thing would help understand a little. Like, it's military?

Looks like a chinook but its hard to tell..

Looks like there is some kind of reactors, no?

We see it better in this video

I saw that thing in the news footages only at the very beginning. Not there anymore. Why?

The helo does look like a tandem rotor. The video does show what appears to be rotor movement front and rear.

Along with the military operated CH-46 Sea Knight and CH-47 Chinook there are also civilians operating tandem rotors in the US.

Columbia have operated their Boeing Vertol 107s as fire-fighting aircraft in California.

They also operate Boeing 234s.

In California there is also a privately owned Piasecki H-21. The only one flying in the World.

I'm sorry but that new video doesn't look like the same event to me..It obviously starts with the original but quickly cuts to a zoomed in view..
There is NO way to say its the same event without even seeing any background..

Yes perspective does play a part. But it all moves consistently, each "vertical" section moving a proportionate amount in relation to the others.

The surface winds at LAX were were 15mph from the north. The direction varied slightly but the speed increase dramatically with alitude. At 37,000 feet was 75knots from the NW. A vertical column of smoke would displayed that with the upper portions moving more lower.

The only problem I see with that is at the speeds that thing moves it would have gone 600 miles while the camera man was shooting, it doesn't look like the object in the video is moving nearly that fast,

From the article:
"

The WaveRider is hypersonic, traveling 600 miles in 10 minutes.

Phage I'm really not being difficult. But I think them pics are fake or been altered.
They seem to have been all taken in a short period of time but the base of that trail moves a long way considering how far it must be away..Seems to far to me given the 75knot winds you note.
I'll have to learn to check exif data..

Zorgon,

Thanks for posting this pic. It looks like it was shot in front of the Marina del Rey channel looking North. On this pic it looks like the object in question originated from Vandenberg AFB and not the ocean ... ??? I'm confused ...
edit on 11-11-2010 by AllIsOne because: clarity

The object is an aircraft producing a contrail. It was filmed in December 2009 and reported as a ballistic missile launch.

your example is really not representative: how much time was from start to end; how long trail was

I see a dark elongated object (assumed to be a plane) but where are the wings?

I think we can agree we'd all like to see the full footage with no cuts or edits.

But I have to stop short of saying there's no way that's the same event, it could be.

I don't like the edits any more than you do.

If this was already mentioned on this post I apologize I read through and didn't see it but I could have missed the post. .

The still looks like something I see every day. I live 35 minutes away from an airport on the other side of the mountain and I sit outside and see this all of the time. However, the video is interesting... whatever it is moves quite fast. I can say I have never seen anything moving that quickly coming and going here with my eyes.

It doesn't really matter what the time span was. The motion of the contrail is apparent and the whole contrail moves the same amount. The wind at high altitude was much stronger than the wind at low levels. If the trail was vertical the bottom would move less that the upper parts. It doesn't (allowing for perspective).

Well if you are going to rely on a single piece of evidence and discard everything that doesn't fit the missile model... guess what conclusion you must reach?

that's far no daylight, surface of jet is far no Ideal mirror with wide area; we don't see separate contrails: if that was real jet, it should be very far from cam. moreover, funny moment: to maximize reflecting area, jet should ascend to sky like rocket

I see no way it could be the same event.
There was only one camera filming and he did not get that close.
That new vid you show is much closer so I don't see how its the same camera.
Is there exif data or something in a video that you can check?

I had a dream once when I was younger where there were flying cigars and they looked a lot like this. Either that or the people on that plane are "flying high" in more ways than one and enjoying the biggest... cigar the world has ever seen! Perhaps this is a Batman-like call to Cheech and Chong to make another movie?

At any rate, if the pic JimOBerg posted earlier in the thread was indeed of the same event, then there's really not much doubt of it being a contrail. That's a much better view if it is and much more definitive. I still can't get my head around the fact that no one could say what it was for so long if it was just a plane. I just can't get past that part. I don't see why it takes more than a couple hours at the most to determine that it was a plane if that's in fact what it was.

In addition to your post, to those who claimed it was a plane: Why was a plane flying in a no flying military excercise area UNLOGGED and UNREGISTERED, furthermore spewing contrails, AND the authorities including Pentagon and NORAD had no idea within 24 hrs of that 'plane' or its details in its vicinity????

Is American airspace that vulnerable and manned by village idiots that the nation is depending on for security????

The aircraft is not flying in a no flying military exercise area. It is most likely to be Flight 808 and it was not violating any exercise area. The FAA have already stated that they replayed the radar tapes and found nothing unusual. They also stated that they received no unusual sightings from pilots who were flying in the area. That suggests to me that all they noted on the tapes was routine traffic including the two airliners UPS Flight 902 (UPS902) and America West Flight 808 (AWE808).
