The island's 2,000 residents will be given a "carbon credit card" to present when they pay for power, petrol and food. Frugal users can trade leftover credits for cash, while those who over-consume will have to buy extra units.
Well since it is the richest countries getting fatter, I am sure that the depression is a good thing, right? This can be the new Democrat party platform. Rich countries are having problems with obesity, so we are going to make you poor. Nudge nudge. Look for taxation on things the government think are bad for you. Is this why we are seeing all these things on the MSM now? Like Marie Obama talking about having carrots with your Bic Mac? I am SO going to laugh when they start taxing these things like they tax tobacco. But, oh well, it IS GOOD FOR YOU, all these taxes I mean. edit to add-I notice this is an AP piece. Has anyone put 2 and 2 together yet on the AP? Watch for a LOT more of this type stuff to come out. Ol Cass Sunstein is ratcheting things up. You know how I would combat obesity? Take everyone off the teat of the nanny state. That might do er.
Under the plan-due to go into operation next year headed by professor of lifestyle medicine Garry Egger, the 1800 permanent residents of Norfolk Island will each receive an annual allocation of carbon credits
Professor Egger insists his scheme will be voluntary and could provide islanders with cash for unused carbon credits
"We are not trying to impose ourselves on anybody out there," he said

To begin: I am not a true believer. Climate changes may be occurring, and maybe our carbon contributions are having some effect above and beyond natures cycles. I do not believe that mankind "tipped the balance" at all.
I can't stand carbon credits, a la Al Gore. Its a scam to make some rich, while transferring wealth away from the dominant world powers into the hands of unstable third world countries.
BUT that being said, there is nothing wrong with us reducing our consumption of energy and goods. We need to look in the mirror at our lifestlye and eating habits. In America in particular, we don't need these monster sized houses for 2.5 kids and us. We don't need to eat meat every single meal. We don't need all that disposable plastic crap we buy.
I think this personal carbon credit idea isn't really horrible. In its current form, it rewards those who conserve without penalizing those who do not. And with a cash incentive, it would encourage personal energy consumption changes.
I know if it meant an extra $50 in my pocket per month (on top of bill savings), I'd be much more vigilant at turning off each and every light, turning the heater down a notch, etc.edit on 7-11-2010 by blamethegreys because: because clarity is next to godliness.
I'm sorry if this thread ruffled your feathers....so to say. I can only hope you're not angry with me. You say, "Your first clue...".....? Me or someone else?
Yeah GOOD ONE GUYS... here's an idea quit acting superior start ACTUALLY DOING YOUR RESEARCH and Don't listen to THE SIERRA CLUB or it's IDIOT hollywood A Holes that encourage everyone but themselves to live like PEASANTS so they can live in luxury... Your first clue should have been when there were more PRIVATE JETS being chartered for your average climate SUMMIT than for a G20 MEETING... LOL yeah you listened to them !!
You're exactly right!!! The "using your peers against you" is so well said. With your help and some others, maybe I'll get across what I wanted to say. I'm just learning this forum thing...just one more experience in life. Blessings to you and yours, Puzzle Oh, could you enlighten me on the Baha thing? It's hard keeping up on everything...
So *everyone* on the island gets a card..but its voluntary? lol. Way to put peer pressure to the test.....and a good insight into how many of you will be scr*e*wed into accepting enslavement the coming years... The same kind of "use your peers against you" and tptb's reliance on human vanity for social enslavement thing worked in Baha too.
That was really hard to read................ and I'm not quite sure what you were tryin to say
You kinda' hit on one of my pet peeves. Everytime I have to pay $1.00 to put air in my tires it really ticks me off. What a scam. It may not be for the air we breath "yet", but it's close. Actually, paying for air/oxygen we breath is already happening...in LA, Las Vegas, Denver, and all over the country. I suppose they're selling oxygen in other countries by now too. Check this out: (I know it's old news to some, but to others it may be new)
Well now everyone knows that it was only a matter of time that we would be charged for the air that we breath....we pay for the food we eat....damn we need it to live we pay for the water we drink...hmmm another thing we NEED to live so why not pay for the air that we breath ...seems like a reasonable request to me...but Hey we can't call it a breathing tax now could we...we would need to come up with some other lame brained scam and call it ...Hey i know Carbon Credits
